Former Letterman says PeaceModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower
See UT. They wanted to fire Mack Brown for being ranked in the top 10 and winning at least 9+ games every year because he couldn't beat Oklahoma. I kept telling my UT friends to shut up and enjoy the good life. Shortly thereafter, they won the national championship, and it shut them up for a good 10-15 minutes.
Apples and oranges, sir.
not really because I am wondering if we ever get better would we still have the doom & gloomers? my point is: we have alot of doom & gloomers because we suck but I betcha even the successful teams have doom and gloomers because the bar just keeps getting raised. dont ya think JT? C-ya @ Milos!

Well, great feedback. I'm touched by all the don't let the door hit you on your way out and you're a loser non-athlete comments. That's great. My point was SMU needs to change the model and hiring the Larry Coker's of the world is not going to bring people like myself back. A lot of people can claim to be the most devoted ponyfan on earth, buying season tickets, donating, etc. but nothing can replace the lasting impression on a young kid a full stadium, load passionate cheering fans, and winning can have. These are the ponyfans we need. Are you that type of fan? Are you contributing to something that will produce that type of fan. Where's the emotional attachment? When tears roll down your face if your team loses.
My nephew is at that young impressionable age and I've taken him to SMU games and he hasn't asked to go back. He loves the third down thunder though. He'd rather see the Lindale Eagles play. That's what I'm talking about. Why would a letterman in football or anyone for that matter want to come back to what we have right now. It's a losing culture. We need to blow this thing up. Starting with a coach who will teach fundamentals, not run a spread offense with mediocre talent, talk to letterman, build realationships, attract good assistants, and will be commited for the long haul. It's a tough task and Orisini is doing the best he can to find this man. I do still have a glimmer of hope. I just can't wait for the day when I can tell my wife, How about going to Dallas this weekend for an SMU game, and not get an eye roll and grunt. I remeber seeing tears roll down Ramon Flanigan's face when we secured a winning season in 1997 for the first time in a long time. I wonder what he has to say about all this?
The dude obviously wasn't in a fratenity and didn't experience the boulevard. No matter how much we lose or bi*** about the coaching search, that experience is one of the best in the nation. The boulevard has been the heart beat of SMU football, so as long as there is a program, we will have fun. So don't give up!
CO, there are some really passionate people on this board. Flanigan's a warrior. Where's he coaching now?
What the hell does the spread have to do with it? We scored enough points to win 8 games. We need talent, period. What you are saying is good in secondary education. We need players, period! You should no that. You played in the 90's, so you sucked and we continue to get players that suck. We have a nucleus of players, but we go two deep at no postion. We need players! It is hard to get football players at this University. I can recruit some of the top athletes in the DFW is the admissions process was changed. We have mother and fathers who would love for their kids to stay close to home and many of the kids would love to be close to home. I get sick of hearing about fundamentals. This is not Pop Warner. This kids were taught fundamentals long ago. We just get the players whose fundamentals will never compare to the fundamentals of players at other schools. Nobody teaches fundamentals in college. If you are that far behind you don't get recruited. Go home, take your kid to soccer practice and do whatever you do before you started posting again, My alumni. Matter of fact most of the lettermen at SMU need to stay in the background. This is one reason we can't recruit. Recruits look at this bunch of losers and say damn, you played football?
Hey CoFan,
1. Learn how to punctuate. 2. LBJ? True SMU fans don't go anywhere north of Northwest Highway. Have fun in Idaho, [deleted].
I guess I am trying to understand the inconsistencies in your posts. You say we need more support to change this program, but earlier you said you left SMU in your rear view mirror. You have left me (and probably many others) trying to figure out what position you are coming from. I didn't play college football, but I imagine that I would never turn my back on the school I played for unless it directly stabbed me in the back. I also didn't go to SMU as an undergrad, but as a grad student, so most students like me have a lot less loyalty. I haven't missed a home game in 6 years, and I have been to at least 1 away game 4 of the 6 years. This is just to let you know where I am coming from and why I am wondering why people like you are not more tied to the school than I am because you had closer experiences to SMU than I did, and not trying to be part of the solution by supporting the program.
COpony
I am glad to hear you have some hope. There is hope. SMU has alot to offer. And with the right coach we can be successful. It really is not going to take that much for somebody to be a "hero". If say a Todd Graham comes in here, or some other good coach and wins 7, 8 games and takes us to a bowl....that coach will always be remembered as "the guy that brought back SMU football from the dead". He will practically be a "saint"! Yes the empty stadium is very depressing to all of us. But in some ways you are preaching to the choir. Most of us attend all the games....you dont. Yes you played.....but then left......we stayed. We are the die-hards. Obviously we live and breathe SMU football. We want many of the same things you do. With the right coach we will win 7-8 games and that will start the ball in motion and many of these problems will go away. Don't give up hope..... Orsini is going to get this turned around! C-ya @ Milos!
you have to win games before you fill the stands, period.
This board is where those of us who cant get any work done until a coach is hired come to get the latest, debate, and vent. While you (and a lot of others) trash SMU, we will be here doing what we can to contribute, buy season tickets, boulevard, donate, and anything else we can do to improve our program. I say take your garbage elsewhere. If you want to degrade my alma matar, go to any bar and talk to strangers about SMU. Its certainly not hard to find a crowd to do that. I get it almost daily from my friends that went to schools like TCU, OU, and UT. I hear "yeah, good luck getting him", "smu f-n sucks", and "i cant believe you actually care" constantly. But you know what? At the end of the day, SO and this coaching search has landed SMU on national sporting news several times in the past few weeks. And for once in a long time, sports anchors are talking about SMU. Hell, I get goose bumps when I see a winning SMU score on a TICKER!! That press is evidence enough to me that Steve Orsini is doing a hell of a job. SMU getting mentioned as competitive with Georgia Tech, UCLA, and Michigan??? That is amazing in my book, and I cant wait for the days to come for SMU football. How about just two years ago? I dont think any further explanation is needed when I say "24-10" Thinking about that game keeps me going, and is the reason I am an SMU fan. It gives me chills thinking about that night. So overall, if you want to trash my school, take a hike. I come here to share thoughts and interact with people that have that same common interest and goal. You are the reason the "losing culture" attitude survives. We will be the first ones to fill the seats through the good times and the bad. One day, we will look around a full stadium at the end of a winning season, and it will all be worth it. And when that day comes, I hope you dust off your letter jacket and wear it proudly. Otherwise, dont let the door hitcha...
How do you get talent bigdaddy? How do you recruit them? We can't do it the same way we did it in the 80s bro. Also, you must never have watched a college/pro football practice before because everyday you start with fundamentals. Fundamentals are things like qb making reads, OL blocking technique, receiver routes, etc. These make a huge difference. I am not that concerned about fundamentals, but overall schemes and football game management/decision making. We could have won a few more games last year if those things were improved. ie. running Demyron Martin from sideline to sideline instead of straight up and down the field. That is purely coaching dude. Talent needs to be improved, but it is not about talent. You think App. State has more talent than Michigan? You think Boise State has more talent than Oklahoma? come on dude, wake up. I think the quality of players in the 90s was fine. We beat Arkansas 3 straight years. Coaching sucked though. The only players that hang around are the ones who like SMU and want to see it succeed, so I think they are a good thing. The others stay away. The former players are not involved in recruiting anyway. Against the rules dude. They would only help too, because the recruits can relate to them better than they can to regular students and alums who are driving new Ranger Rovers around on daddy's nickel.
