UCLA or SMU

Postby Nacho » Thu Dec 27, 2007 9:58 am

I'm going with UCLA. Here is a big state school that apparently has adopted the SMU model hook, line and sinker. They are from what I can tell even more clueless than SMU. They may end up getting a good coach based on their prior reputation but right now it looks ulikely. They seem OK with going 6-6 and a minor bowl. USC is light years ahead of them. Neuheisel is the logical choice but they can't take him because it would damage their high and mighty image of themselves and also hurt the chances of their AD who wants a bigger job in the NCAA. I take comfort in knowing that we are not the most cluless team in college football.

Never underestimate the ability of SMU to be clueless about football. We may yet be #1!

Golden turned down UCLA stating, We are are on the verge of doing something really special at Temple. When you get turned down by a coach who has won 5 games over the last 2 years to stay at Temple you know something is wrong, very wrong.

You can never count SMU out. Based on what JJ does we may yet get the coveted # 1 spot.

I'm not countng JJ out (who turned down UCLA). If Hawaii can't come come close to $2 milllion/yr I can see him coming here. It seems unlikely but money talks.

I know it very rarely happens in modern college athletics, but maybe the guy at Temple is genuinely happy and content with his current job? Plus the satisfaction of being able to build a moribund program like Temple into a successful program is very satisfying (I would imagine). Yes money talks and sh*t walks, but some people (very few) look at more things than just the bottom line.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Maybe this guy Golden loves Temple and Philadelphia and never wants to leave. Maybe he wants to be the next Joe Paterno and coach there into is 80s. OK fine by me but the point is that there was a time when coaches would have crawled on their hands and knees to UCLA to be the HC there. I don't follow them closely but someting has gone wrong there from what I can tell. 3 HCs (Bellotti, JJ, Golden) that I know of have already turned them down. Chow has puled out. We seem to be in a better position than them but the longer we string Fran and Coker along I become uneasy that they will say Forget it.

I would think it is more likely that UCLA turned him down and it was passed on to him through his agent in order that he could respectfully pull out of the search. That is the way it is done all the time.

Crazy how essentially one person brought down UCLA's program.

That person? Edgerrin James.

Discuss.

The UCLA situation is compounded by the fact that the assistant coach is a huge reason why they have the No. 6 rated recruiting class in the country-so any decision needs to address how are they going to keep the class-I'd rather be in their situation than in ours with a class of Sun Belt level recruits

Wasn't Cade McNown the QB of that really good UCLA team that missed out on the national championship because of a late season loss to Miami?
