talks about NFL --
There has been speculation that Jones, who had head coaching stints in the NFL in Atlanta and San Diego, might like one more. "I'm not looking, but if the right situation comes along I'd always listen," he said. "I would think there will be a lot of turnover in the NFL this year, but whether somebody calls, I don't know." He said the "right situation" would be one where "whoever I'm working for believes in the same principles that I believe in. It is being at the right place with people who know what it takes to win. Quite honestly, many teams in the National Football League really, from top to bottom, don't really know what it takes to win."
Very interesting... I wonder what JJ's take is on our commitment to win?
Re: Hawaii football coach's new salary may top $1M...OK - so SMU has $10MM to spend on a new coach (and staff?)...I would assume someone like JJ would want at least a 4-5 year commitment from SMU in order to make a move. So, how much are the assitants paid per year - $1MM total or maybe more? So, 4 years at $1.5MM per year to the HC plus 4 years at $1MM per year to the assitants. Total of $10MM spent on the new staff. I'm guessing SMU can go as high as about $1.5 per year to hire a coach....is that enough to land JJ?
Reed, I am certain the big SMU donors are as frustrated as everyone else. If it means one last 'Pony Up' to get this deal done they will do it.
This is SMU after all.
That's good...I hope they do. I'm just trying to get an idea as to what SMU would actually be able to offer. I think you have a shot with June Jones but not sure what the odds are. As I've said before, he could get a significant pay raise at SMU and actually have some games on at reasonable (east coast) times. This might be appealing - it's just tough to know how he is being treated by the Hawaii admin. With Coker and Fran as "fallbacks", I think SMU is in a pretty good shot. I doubt Orsini would be waiting around for JJ if he didn't think SMU has a reasonable shot - even if it is along shot.
Re: Hawaii football coach's new salary may top $1M...
There is a lot more money where that $10 mil came from. If it is needed, the support is there The sole export of Chuck Norris is pain
He is also very concerned about the pay that his assistant coaches receive. I don't think Hawaii pays them well at all, and it sounds like Jones wants to bring all of them along if he goes anywhere. Remember, he passed his bonus pay along to his assistants.
