We got the usual less than 1 minute discussion which had its typical negative tone.
To paraphrase (not sure who said this -- wasn't Norm):
"Anyone can start a rumor. SMU can say they are going after June Jones. They can also say they are going after Bill Billecheck"
Wonder what they will say when we hire Jones and if they talk about it for more than 1 minute?

That was Bob Sturm who said that.

At this point, you certainly can't blame them for the "believe it when we see it" attitude.

Agree.
We put ourselves in this situation.
It is up to us to dig ourselves out and become credible again.

The "situation" we're in is not a bad one. We've got an AD with a boatload of money aiming for the stars. Sure, we lost out on Paul Johnson. Reload and try again. The alternative is we could have just gone ahead and hired the OC at Stephen F if we needed a coach quickly.

i disagree. 60 days without a head coach is not acceptable, regardless of the situation. Bennett should not have been fired if we weren't ready to have contingency plans is the Navy coach chose GT over us. I wonder if the deal was in place verbally with Jones and he backed out......and in all seriousness why would he leave Hawaii for SMU?
How many other programs go 3 weeks without a coach? I never have heard of 60 days. At this point I would love an interim coach in place just to sign letters to recruits........

Let me ask you this, Greg. Do your feelings change at all if we do get Jones in here, who surely has to be viewed as an upgrade to Phil Bennett? We'd all like to have had a top notch coach announced the day after Phil was fired, but you have to give at least some credit to a guy in Orsini who's apparently not going to settle for anything below a top tier guy.

Until we announce, SO has played the "hand" he was given. With his coaching salary war chest, he was able to draw some extra cards. He will have a winning hand because he stayed in the game, didn't telegraph was he was doing.
Sometimes a pair can win.
