Questions for SMU fans...

Postby Dr Death » Sat Jan 05, 2008 10:59 pm

I have a few questions and I'm hopeful some of you can provide some answers.

Stadium - What is the seating capacity of your stadium? I've seen some photos... is it called Ford Stadium? It looks very small. Nothing wrong with that, it could be great for creating atmosphere. Just curious what the seating capacity is...

Uniform/School Colors - One of the great things JJ did at Hawaii was to change the landscape of the school colors and theme. From Rainbow Warriors with green and white and a rainbow on the helmet to mostly black with a powerful H logo. How wedded to your colors are you? It is my feeling/belief that JJ will strive for change. Black will be prominent in someway. Your Mustang logo is cool, but I have a feeling he will be going for darker colors. Curious as to your thoughts on this.

QB's - Can someone give me some insight into your QB's... bio's and/or personal thoughts on who will work best in a Run & Shoot scheme.

WR's - Same as above...

OL - Same as above...

Now, I know I am asking quite a few questions. In return for this I will answer any questions you may have about the Run & Shoot offense, something I have followed/studied/coached since 1984 when I first saw it with the Houston Gamblers in the USFL.

It is true that I am a Hawaii Warrior fan and am finding the fact that JJ is leaving very sad. It is entirely the fault of the AD... the guy in Hawaii is a complete incompetent fool. JJ took Hawaii to amazing heights considering the obstacles he had to overcome. I have followed June since 1984 and I am a serious student/believer/practitioner of the Run & Shoot offense. I appreciate any and all responses and look forward to sharing thoughts and ideas with you about June Jones the man, as well as his beloved offense.

Ford holds about 32k. It is one of the nicest facilities in D1.

As far as colors. We are tied to Red and Blue. That will NEVER change. But many are hoping to go back to the unis worn in more successul days

Maybe we will get a new name, too? There was some talk many moons ago about taking the Methodist out of S M U..maybe JJ will spark that again, who knows?

The oldtimers (and Darth is one of them) wants SMU to go back to the Pony Express uniforms.

Haven't met him, but have attended clinics he's put on, have several of his playbooks, plus a video tape of Mouse teaching all aspects of the Run & Shoot. The tape series is six VHS tapes. Also have some cut ups when he was the coach with the New York/New Jersey Knights in the World League back in 1992.

and become Southern Univ? That already exists. Apparently they have a better bball team than us. Maybe we could arrange a swap? We get the name we get their bball team?

I think SMU will let him alter the uniforms to a degree. I don't think that's a particularly big deal. Many of us would like to see a return to the old uniforms we had back when we were really successful.

Ford seats 32k but could be expanded to seat something like 50k I think. Right now, that's just not needed. If we get successful, that could be another thing.

SMU ran the run and shoot when we came back from the death penalty. It's fun to watch and I wouldn't mind seeing us return to it. Our QB and WRs are probably well-suited for it too.

Sorry you are apparently losing a great coach. We are very excited about the possibilities in football for the first time in 20+ years. Our stadium holds 32,000 with some room to expand. it was completed in 2000. our colors are red and blue. We have had lots of debate about uniforms lately, so this will be interesting. We are very attached to our colors.

Our QB is Justin Willis, who was awesome in his rs-freshman year and had a tough year last year. Our line struggles to protect him and he had a turnover problem. He has set all sorts of SMU records.

I let other fill in some of the other blanks on the lin and receivers. But with the receivers he should have some good ones to work with particularly Emmanuel Sanders who also set a a TD receiving record (or at least tied it).

Really feel for you and all the Hawaii fans out there who are losing a great coach. We realize what he has done for the Hawaii program and know that the AD appears to have managed this situation horribly. At the same time, we are tremendously excited about the possibility of Jones coming to SMU and hope that similar results can be achieved here, first and foremost that we can establish a renewed culture of WINNING FOOTBALL.

As far as uniforms, I've said before on this board that SMU should choose a good look (my preference is the Pony Express-era white helmet with red mustang, blue jersey and white pants), and KEEP IT. I can't stand this idea of changing uniforms every year or so, in some kind of vain hope that it will produce wins.

In addition to what mt327 said about Ford Stadium, the southern end (if I recall correctly) can be closed, which will expand the capacity to 45k. And size aside, Ford is about the nicest facility around. We don't have a training table nor do we lettermen's dorms anymore, but out other support facilities (training facilities, learning center, etc.) are all first class.

All our QBs are small but very mobile, and would conceivably be ideal for a quick-pass run & shoot offense. Our starter, '08 Junior Justin Willis, is a player. He set the school TD record as a frosh, was named CUSA freshman of the year, CUSA offensive freshman of the year and 3rd team Freshman All-American. Not the most powerful arm, but he's highly accurate and has a knack for making something out of nothing. The is the kind of kid JJ will conceivably love. Willis needs coaching to reach the upper echelons -- his production fell off this past year -- and JJ might be the man to accomplish this. Freshmen backups Rhodes and Turner also have wheels.

The WR position may need some tending to. We have an athletic, prolific scorer in 6'1 Emmanuel Sanders, an absolute barn-burned in FR Aldrick Robinson, and a surprise performer in Zach Zimmerman. Other than that, a bunch of young guys who haven't proven themselves yet. We lost our big possession receivers year before last. The Mustangs are deep and talented at TE, but we never seem to utilize them to their potential.

No clue how our offensive line is going to shake out, having graduated Peveto, Ben Poynter and Kenard Burley. My sense is that we'll need to bolster the OL with some JUCO help. That being said, from what I saw in the Sugar Bowl, we couldn't be any worse than the speedbumps UofH calls an OL.

IF Coach Jones actually comes to Dallas, it will be EXTREMELY interesting to see what he can make out of the existing talent on this roster.

The big question is what will he be able to do with our defense. His offense will need lots of points to make for the holes in our d which was one of the worst in D1 last year.
