This is a very unconventional thought, but I was curious what you guys would think.
If a "big name" coach doesn't come to SMU soon, would it be terrible to sign one of the remaining football coaches to a 1-year contract, just to get geared up? The guy would understand that they'd be looking for a replacement, and he'd basically be a long-term interim coach. I'm not saying it would be as newsworthy as the WVU promotion, but it wouldn't be the "hostage" situation it is now...and who knows what kind of potential might come to the fore if the right person is given the opportunity?
Regardless, SMU and your team are very important to the Metroplex, and I think it's better to at least get something small going by promoting a coach you already have now rather than to keep playing games with other coaches that end up deciding against coming to Dallas.
Of course, I have yet to hear anything decisive about JJ other than that he flew home and Hawai'i wants to keep him, so if he does come here, this topic will be rendered moot...
You guys have a good thing going, and I liked the "Pony Up" campaign since you started it, all kidding aside. Really looking forward to some good programs in the Metroplex; we could have some fun games in the near future! Plus, I live closer to SMU now, so even with the baby, it would be an easy trip to visit you guys if North Texas were to play at your place! (Oh yeah, and my wife doesn't like straying too far from Dallas, so it's easier to get her to a game that way too!)

JJ has not flown home and is not scheduled to fly home until Tuesday.
I do not see the logic in hiring someone from a staff that fielded a 1-11 football team, especially when there is a former national championship winner waiting in the wings, in addition to a coach who has had incredible success at the two mid-major programs in the region that he coached and at least moderate success at the Big 12 school in the state he coached.

Try signing a recruit with a coach on a one-year deal.
Never happen.

Weird...I'd heard he'd already left. Hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday will yield positive things after all. Pony4Life wrote:Try signing a recruit with a coach on a one-year deal. Never happen.
I agree about the recruiting problem, but are those others really "waiting in the wings"? If so, then good, at least there are options, but if it's just propaganda, then what? westexSMU wrote:UNTJesse wrote: (Oh yeah, and my wife doesn't like straying too far from Dallas, so it's easier to get her to a game that way too!)

Hehe you guys should know by now I already support you, even though I (of course) have to support my own team when it's SMU/UNT! TheBestAvailable wrote:Take that stupidity all the way back to DENTON and leave it there!!!!
Bite me. I said it was a weird thought to begin with and was thinking about the options you guys have...note that I said IF a "big name" didn't come in soon. I don't know why a program like SMU, even after a couple of tough seasons, would have such a hard time finding a coach, especially with the payroll that is attached. With so many decent Mustangs here, you'd think somebody would have shot a horse like you before you tried to ruin the herd.

A one-year hire probably means losing not only this year's recruiting class (which we already have done to an extent) but next year's too. It would devastate the program.

Is it even possible to devastate it more than it is now though?
