I wouldn't get real hung up on McMackin

Postby TexasTechFan » Wed Jan 09, 2008 1:40 pm

As a Tech fan, I don't think y'all should be to worked up if you can't get McMackin. As I recall, most of his recruiting prowess is finding JuCo guys, and I'm not sure SMU is really going to be big in the JuCo business, but I could be wrong.

Tech's reputation as a lousy defense has its roots in his tenure in Lubbock. I really think y'all would be better off finding a younger guy with deep Texas ties for recruiting.

We need assistants to have deep ties to Texas without question. Jones has recruited Texas while at Hawaii, but at the extent that he will be asked to here at SMU. I'm still in favor of McMackin, but if he decides to stay at Hawaii/go elsewhere, I'd like JJ to look at getting somebody who knows how to recruit Texas. I have no doubt that we'll be able to attract some good candidates with the kind of money we are throwing around.

With dozens of applications rolling into Manoa, there are many qualified candidates to replace June Jones. Greg McMackin is one of them.

The only difference with McMackin is he can make an immediate impact and has UH's entire staff on his side.

"I just have no comment," said McMackin. "It's just not the right time, but I appreciate everybody."

McMackin isn't saying much about his intentions. But sources tell KGMB9, he's done the paperwork and it should reach UH administrators very soon.

He's also said to have the support of June Jones who also would welcome him at SMU if McMackin doesn't come to terms with Hawaii. So there's a time crunch all around with job opportunities here and in Texas for McMackin.

"I think to go outside and this was the position we had all along would be a mistake," said UH assistant coach Jeff Reinebold. "You would put the program behind years, not days, years. Greg's here, ready to go and I think he'd do a great job."

"Time is of the essence," said Warriors assistant Rich Miano. "We need to know who are bosses are and what direction were going. I think the next 3 or 4 days crucial to the University football program."

As for June Jones, while he is back in the islands, he did not come by his office as expected Wednesday morning.

He ended up rescheduling his meeting with the assistant coaches.

Jones is said to have been at the UH athletics complex last night after arriving back from Dallas.

Man I really feel for June Jones right now. Its not easy to face people you know you've disappointed. I guess the silver lining for him is that most people are not mad at him for leaving. They are made at the administration at Hawaii for ever letting things get to this point. Hopefully they can see how disastrously this whole thing was handled and make the necessary changes.
