Coach approaching huge milestone

Postby DallasDiehard » Wed Jan 09, 2008 12:48 pm

Mentioned it in another thread, but I thought I'd point out that Rhonda Rompola is on the verge of some real history. Coach RR is fast-approaching her 300th career victory.

I called over to the athletic department and learned that former men's coach Doc Hayes had 299 career wins, so once we pound UCF Friday night, she'll be tied for the most wins by any basketball coach in school history. Then, to hit 300 on national TV .... that would be huge.

OK, Ponies, do your part - run all over UCF and Southern Miss!

What a great achievement this will be! I hope Kate picks up on this and gives Rhonda the proper accolades, as should we.

I know after that Tulsa loss Rhonda took some hits. I couldn't agree more - that was a tough loss but in the grand scheme of things, Rhonda has had enourmous success here at SMU since the 1990's. A huge milestone like the 300th win couldn't happen to a nicer and more genuine person. Good luck and congrats Coach RR!

Per SMUMustangs.com:

Milestones In Reach This Weekend For Women's Basketball
Rompola approaching school record and 300th win

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU women's basketball head coach Rhonda Rompola has a chance to reach two historic milestones this weekend when the SMU women's basketball team hosts a pair of crucial Conference USA games at Moody Coliseum. Rompola has a chance to match former SMU men's coach E.O. "Doc" Hayes' all-time SMU basketball record with 299 career victories, and then can break the record and become the first basketball coach in school history to win 300 games.

Now in her 17th season on the Hilltop, Rompola has a career record of 298-192. Hayes won his 299 games over 20 seasons, from 1947-67. The Mustangs' Jan. 2 victory at Texas-San Antonio kept alive their streak of reaching double figures in wins in every season Rompola has been the team's head coach, including five seasons with 20 or more wins. Rompola also has guided the Ponies into the postseason eight times. She has been named conference Coach of the Year five times, coached 24 players to all-conference honors and had nine players named to all-conference tournament teams.

The Mustangs (10-4, 0-1 Conference USA) will host the Knights of UCF (7-7, 0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday night at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs have never lost to the Knights, winning, 73-47, at Moody Coliseum last year and 79-58 in the Conference USA Tournament.

The Mustangs also host Southern Miss (10-4, 1-0) at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPN2. SMU has won three of four previous meetings with Southern Miss, including last year's 69-65 win in Hattiesburg, Miss.
