Jones Returns to Islands

Postby Pony^ » Wed Jan 09, 2008 11:08 pm

HONOLULU -- Former University of Hawaii Warriors football head coach June Jones arrived back in Honolulu on Tuesday night after accepting the job at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Jones was whisked away using a VIP exit at the Honolulu International Airport.

He went to his former office on Tuesday night after his Dallas flight, athletics staff members said.

"I think it's hard for him right now to face anybody. He doesn't want to break down," UH offensive line coach Dennis McKnight said.

UH assistant football coaches had expected to meet with Jones on Wednesday morning at the athletics offices, but one of the apparent problems was the media camped out waiting to talk to him.

However, assistant coach Rich Miano said Jones' decision to not meet with the athletics staff on Wednesday had more to do more with emotions and not the camped out cameras.

"He just doesn't want to have to deal with having to say goodbye to everybody," Miano said. "He's an emotional guy. This is a very tough decision for sure since he's been back in the islands. Many people have tried to persuade him to stay here."

Miano, who has decided to stay in Hawaii despite an offer to follow Jones to SMU, said he thinks Jones will schedule a news conference to say goodbye to the fans and his players.

When that will be and when Jones leaves the islands is still not known.

Apparently, the Hawaii media=bad media, decided to stop reading the DMN. He's coming back Monday. The less he talks to people there and goes into seclusion, the better.

He should give his farewell press conference at the airport before he returns.

"Miano, who has decided to stay in Hawaii despite an offer
to follow Jones to SMU"

How does Miano know if he would be retained
by the new head coach at Hawaii?

Asst coaches usually are not retained by a new coach are they?

Jones rides off to SMU

UH assistants left wondering who is in charge

By Dave Reardon

Hawaii assistant football coaches were left wondering
not only about their futures yesterday.
The present was a mystery as well.

They did not know who was in charge after head
coach June Jones' decision to leave UH for SMU and news that
athletic director Herman Frazier would soon no longer hold his post.

"Nobody said a word to us," receivers coach Ron Lee said. "I
don't know who the AD is now and there's no coach."

No interim or temporary coach was named yesterday. No meeting
was held.

Associate head coach George Lumpkin held the post temporarily
when Jones was incapacitated by a car accident in 2001. But
Lumpkin was in Los Angeles yesterday, visiting his mother and
attending a coaches' convention.

"At this point, I haven't been named interim coach," said Lumpkin,
who might not be back in Hawaii until Thursday. "The other
coaches told me no one has told anyone anything."

Jones invited all of his assistants to join him at SMU.
Defensive coordinator Greg McMackin, quarterbacks coach
Dan Morrison and running backs coach Wes Suan have taken
him up on it so far.

"I'd love to go with June," Lee said. "But I don't know if I want
to live in Texas. I don't have cowboy boots or a cowboy hat."

Among the assistants, defensive line coach Jeff Reinebold,
linebackers coach Cal Lee and defensive backs coach Rich Miano
are at least somewhat interested in replacing Jones.

"He'd probably give me an interview," Ron Lee said of his
younger brother.

He told JJ he would come but this was before an apparent push by some boosters to consider him for the HC position. Do not know if McMackin is interested in the HC position. Since the AD was fired, everything is in limbo over there. Of course, he has both a home and family in Texas. JJ needs to get him on the recruiting trail.

I'll be sure to sport my SMU gear on the islands this summer for vacation. As much of it as I can.

The 'true' sign of JJ's success at SMU and the school's return to the football 'spotlight' will be when SMU apparel is available for purchase at sporting goods stores in Hawaii. ;) Kind of like finding OU, LSU, Notre Dame, etc. apparel in Dallas sporting goods stores.

I would imagine he did it to make them mad at him. It is much easier to leave a place with them cursing you then to have them begging you to stay.
