It's mute? Why can't that point talk? Let it talk, I say!

Which Asians? The Asian people from India do not really want to be called "asian" when you are refering to exterior physical characteristics as they are rather unique and more closely related to caucasians.
And what about pacific-islanders like the native hawaiians? PI'ers are dispersed across multiple continents but most closely resemble people from east-asia formerly refered to as 'mongoloid' or 'oriental'. Are they asian in the context of 'I saw a group of people who appeared to be ______'?
What exactly are your rules?

True, it's not really being PC as much as it's being accurate. It would be like me calling you a "car".
Just inaccurate...no one's saying you're racist, discriminatory, etc. I totally agree trying to be PC sometimes gets in the way of accuracy.

Then how do you distinguish east asians from other 'asian' people, like indians, arabs, caucasians west western asia, etc? I don't think 'mongoloid' is a PC term anymore either.
Whoa, easy there. "East asian" works very well to distinguish from those from the subcontinent. Those from Mongolia are referred to as Mongolian. I don't believe there is a specific term to distinguish the people from countries on the subcontinent as a seperate entity from Middle Easterners and East Asians. They are usually just referred to by country--Indian, Pakistani, Afghani etc.
Get over your hippie PC crap and realize: the area is commonly referred to as the orient, and people from there oriental. It isn't racist. I'm from the Americas, I'm American... If someone is Arab, they are from the Arabia. It makes sense! Don't be stupid and foul up the perfectly logical, non-racist way to refer to a people with your PC crap
Was just responding to a question. I also hate all of the PC nonesense, but couch'em was correct--mongoloid is an insulting term unless it is being used as a medical term to describe a specific defect, and even that will probably be renamed before long.
But nothing wrong with being a hippie (as long as you shower!) Has nothing to do with being PC--that comes from the political left and all hippies are not politically left. One of my biggest complaints about the SMU crowd and people from my home state is that you don't get it--it is not an insult to call someone a hippie.

It turned out that they were University of Hawaii fans who came to the states to see Hawaii play UNLV. And some of them went on an excursion all the way to Branson. Let me tell you, Hawaii fans travel when their team wins. And they had an amazing season. There was quite a large crowd of them at the Super Dome for the Sugar Bowl.
Just an FYI, Oriental applies to objects and Asian applies to people.
Sorry if I didn't use a term that was "PC". I was complimenting the Hawaii fans. I'm not the best nor do I care much about being "PC". I think that this country is going down the tubes because of "PC". Just my opinion.
I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY SMUstang! This is supposed to be a free country, but if you say something that is not PC its a HATE crime! Where is the Bill of Rights when you need it?

The rule is not to disrespect people by calling them what they don't want to be called. I am quite sure no one wants to be called oriental. Orientals are not people. They are rugs. Get it?

Thank you for this thread! i feel like the new kid in school , but I'm a new kid in a great school! What I experienced with JJ in Hawaii was remarkable. This forum has welcomed me and for that I'm also a SMU fan, and that's for life. I'm still a loyal Warrior fan, but I will cheer my heart out for SMU, and I can't wait to see that spread offense destroying Texas!

The rule is don't use a term to describe people that the people you are describing find derogatory. It's real simple.

Here's my thought on this. If you want to be called Americans, OK. If you are black and want to be called African-Americans, OK, If you are Italians and want to celebrate a day that does not exist, OK, or Irish and want to celebrate St. Patrick's day, OK, If you are Gay there is no day yet. If you are Mexican, AZ will soon put it into place for Chavez. Is there a time when this country can come together? I guess this is what we are about? Where is Lincoln when we need him?

I thought the mute point occurred when you have the phone ringing, vacuum cleaner on, stereo blaring, baby crying, your wife yelling at you to do chores, Swanny screaming "Did you SEE THAT RICCHHHH!!!" on the radio, and you firmly press "mute" on the universal suspend reality remote to quiet it all (except Swanny of course).
