SMT: Make sure you take LOTS of SMU apparel to wear up there in the Cornhusker state! Seriously.

I'll be sure to pack an SMU item or two for sure don't you worry. Also, just an observation, but I've always thought Nebraska has some of the classiest fans of any school in the country. You hardly ever hear of any buffoonery (sp?) from their fanbase.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Tomfoolery, yes....bufoonery, only the occasional idiot that gets WAY too drunk--but that happens anywhere. I took some A&M friends (well....a couple of SMU kids that transferred to A&M and their friends) to a game in Lincoln once, and took them to the pre-game bar. They were pretty freaked out walking in with all their A&M gear on, but walked out saying they couldn't believe how nice the fans were.

I don't know of any other town where opposing fans can walk into the busiest bar on gameday and not get ousted, or atleast booed until they leave. The Nebraska fans will usually give you a hard time--if it's game day--but they're more likely to strike up a conversation with you after than get riled up.

In Omaha, the SMU gear will go unnoticed by about half of the town, although there are a decent number of alums around. Anyone who notices though, be ready to get an earful about Bo Pelini too!

huskerpony wrote:Midtown has a new sports bar in Dundee (called Beer and Loathing--stupid name, but decent bar.) This is also right across the street from the Dundee Dell (kind of famous bar with pretty decent food and also claims to have the largest collection of scotch in the world--also has 1 big screen.) These are at 50th and Underwood (a few blocks north of Dodge St.--the main road through town.)

If you are out west, I would try to find a Brewsky's (there are several.) But all of your BW3's, Champps, etc. chain places are out there.

Other cool bars downtown: There is a great wine bar called Le Bouvette. Directly across from the Upstream (brewery with over-priced microbrews that aren't that great--but has decent food.) Dives: Barry O's, O'Connors, Billy Frogs. Nicer places: Mr. Toads, French Cafe. There is an underground irish bar (a block west of the Old Chicago) called The Dubliner (doesn't every town have one?) This bar is a great time in the winter (don't ask me why) but live Irish band on weekends, and tons of people pack in during the winter months.

I will second the Dundee Dell. Monique (good young midwest girl) is the bartender, and knows more about scotch and gin than anyone i've met. HP is right, they have the largest scotch selection in the US. the dell also has the best fish and chips i've had outside of london. seriously i know this sounds funny to be saying about a bar in Omaha, NE, but it's true (for the record, i'm not from there, but my in-laws are).

If you want a REAL dive, go to the Holiday lounge on west Dodge. or if you're really brave go to Loui's (www.louisbar.com)

as for Old Market, good neat part of town. younger crowd at the bars. bars in old industrial bldgs w/ apartments/condos above. Toads, BarryO's, etc. all good. i wouldn't call them dives. reminds me of 2nd street in Austin. fun, laid back, unpretentious good times.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

HuskerP - you've sold me. I may have to make a special trip to Omaha.

Pick me up on the way?

Done. You bring the Lone Star for the road. I'll buy a pickup truck just for the trip.

By the way, I was told once that I was one of three people keeping the Shiner Bock on tap there. Even after I sold my house up the street, they still had it, but I came back into town after being gone for a year--no more Shiner.

Shiner? Wow. High brow. ;)

Ha! You know Monique? I love it. They also make a decent fried dill pickle. When I found that out, it was the thing that made it me okay with moving back after college. (Although I would avoid the fish tacos--they just take the fish and chips fish and jam it into a taco shell.)

I guess I didn't mean to give the idea that any of the Old Market bars were dives--just dive-ier than the others.

The Holiday is another good dive (although the Homy is by far the best.) The Holiday and The Interlude Lounge are pretty classic Omaha places, but the crowd has changed at the Holiday a bit. It used to be a place that people went to pick up on divorced women. Now its just young professionals.

Loui's! That is AWESOME! Now THAT is a DIVE! (half liquor store/half bar) What on earth were you doing up in Benson? We used to buy liquor from that place in high school! Anyone brave enough to hang there should also stop by Jim's Rib Haven for ribs--although if it's your first go-round, I would recommend doing it during daylight. Not the best place to be a lost out-of-towner at night (but the best ribs I've ever come across--and get the beef ribs there.)
Also up in that area by Loui's, there is a really great Tappas bar called Espana on Maple St at about 50th or 60th (totally safe area by that point.) I highly recommend it. (owned by a guy that lived in Spain and worked at his aunts bar for a few years--brought back all her recipes.)
