...impressive when you consider that UH was basically starting with poorly rated draft classes (rated around #75) and no real 3- or 4-star players out of high school.

I was curious, Garret, as to how many 3 and 4 star recruits UH would have in a given year. It seems from what I've read that JJ really developed players that were not highly rated.

Excellent information in the initial post. Really enjoyed it.

I'm glad you like the info. I have really enjoyed lurking in this forum and thought I'd pass along some info. Since it is highly unlikely that SMU will play any of my other 2 teams, I can cheer hard for SMU each game...especially against Texas Tech! That will be an awesome offensive game...

If you don't count last year's class, I think UH averages something like *1 to 3* 3-star recruits per year and has a 4-star recruit every decade or so. Sadly, I'm not exaggerating. When UH got a 4-star recruit last year (Ryan Mouton from Houston), there was a debate as to when UH had their previous 4-star recruit and they went back decades in the search.

Most of UH's best players were those that they discovered and nobody else was going after. With a $50,000 recruiting budget and expensive flights to bring in any recruit outside of Hawaii for their recruiting visits, it was really hard to recruit!

By the way, have there been any rumors of the 4 commits that UH has that are from the state of Texas? I figure Bo Mitchell will go to SMU, but what about CB Jeremiah Alexander (Houston Yates), S Chris Banjo (Sugar Land Kempner), and WR Lucious Henderson (Navarro College)? The defensive players are probably being recruited by Jeff Reinbold, but the WR probably was attracted by the offense.

If Hawaii lands either McMackin or Gilbride, Bo Mitchell would still have the opportunity to play in a R&S offense. It is the uncertainty right now that has him looking at going to SMU. He is supposed to be making a visit there which may lock up his commitment. SMU will also have the edge since they will have Morrison as the QB coach (Hawaii would need to fill that position) who is a pretty articulate and patient teacher. On the flipside, what Mitchell will also need to take into account is the QB situation at SMU versus the one in Hawaii. SMU has a capable young gun in Justin Willis with 2 years remaining whereas Hawaii will definitely need someone in 2009. Mitchell could potentially be a 4 year starter at UH if he redshirts and that might be enticing for him to have 4 full years. Plus Ryan Mouton may still be able to convince him to go to UH. Should be interesting to see what happens.

Thanks Garrett, your posts were very intersting and gave me a better insight to June Jones skills as a coach. I can't wait for our season to start. Send your posts to Ponyfans any time. Good luck to UH.

good point

try reading ponyfans on a blackberry not easy with huge quotes

Agreed. It's a pain.

And I'm a big 'Horns fan. Always have been. We own almost as much UT gear in this house as we do SMU. Actually, UT may have the edge right now because the SMU stuff has been pathetic as of late. May this season change that!
