Clean SlateDon't know if this has been posted but June pulled another one
SMU pulls offer: Holland Hall's Matt Allen, a Tulsa World All-State offensive lineman, committed to Southern Methodist last summer, but had his scholarship offer pulled last week by new coach June Jones, who was hired earlier this month. Several other Mustangs recruits have also reportedly suffered that fate. Allen, without another major college football option at this point, is leaning to playing for Princeton. "That's been the backup plan for a few weeks," Holland Hall coach Tag Gross said. "We started becoming worried when SMU had not named a new coach in December. It's very frustrating. It's a reminder that major college football is big business." http://www.tulsaworld.com/sports/articl ... spanc03336 The sole export of Chuck Norris is pain
A case where the high school coach helped his kid look for other options. I think we all recognized that this was a severe reach by the Bennett staff.
And the coach had the right perspective on this -- college athletics is a big business whether we like it or not. We always talk about choosing a school is the first major decision of one's life. Looks like Princeton is a pretty nice plan. Good luck to Matt Allen. I think also illustrates how poor the Bennett staff evaluated OL and DL and that Jones' staff has a different and perhaps better system. That should make BUS happy -- get some real linemen. That's where you win and lose games. See Rice 2006.
Recruting is a two way street. These kids can bail on the school at the last second as well.
What I'm oppposed to are schools/coaches that pull scholarships from athletes once they're enrolled. It's my understanding that SMU doesn't practice this. In regards to this commitment I have no problem with JJ pulling an offer from a kid who played football in the SPC. The fact is, you don't see too many successful programs with a lot of kids from Kincaid, Holland Hall, St Johns, etc...on their rosters.
Hey, don't knock SPC. It's the Conference USA of high school Football in TX...Okay, bad example. Go Trojans!! ![]() Go RED! Go BLUE! Go MUSTANGS! S-M-U!!
Gosh, I remember Cavan and Bennett always having at least between 3-6 guys on the roster from an SPC school or some prep school in SEC country like MBA...I knew one who got a scholarship coming out of Kinkaid, he eventually dropped out of school. The others were walk ons I guess...
The last SPC kid I remember doing anything in D-1 football is probably that St Marks' guy who plays or played at UT.
Just this one, general? Dallas Mavericks - 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!
Long live the Circle of Champions!
Think the St. Marks' kid you are talking about is Sam Acho who signed with UT last year. Or His little brother Emmanuel who will sign this year. Also MBA put out a pretty big time kid named Preston Bailey this year who is signing with TN. Also the #1 center prospect in the nation, Barrett Jones, is from one of those SEC prep schools and going to Bama. It is surprising how often those schools produce serious talent...look at St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida.
Having graduated from an SPC school, I would have to agree.
Trinity Valley had Michael Ungar who played at Texas, but he's been out about 5 years now, I think.
Patrick Jeffers was a private school kid at Ft. Worth Country Day and walked on to Virginia and had a few years in the NFL; drafted in the 5th round and had half a season with the Cowboys, I think. 1,000 yard receiving season once. That was years ago.
Yep, and Patrick's sister is married to Derek Dooley. (For your SMU connection) ![]()
