Why can't we get a game there against Notre Dame, USC, Michigan? It would be good exposure for a major team out of the region and even though we'd probably get pounded, I'm sorry I'd rather get pounded by USC than watch us play Stephen F. Austin. Doesn't Jerry have a bit of a soft spot for SMU?

Why don't we ever play LSU? LSU fans travel really well and we could host them in Dallas at either the Cotton Bowl or Jerry World. Sure we would get our butt kicked, but we could work out a good money split at the gate.

If we didn't want to go the SEC route, what about playing Stanford (a good academic/athletic school like SMU) in a home and home deal?

I am surprised by some of these postings. Small steps first. Its going to take a few conference USA championships before anything involving SMU and a big school takes place. Interest in SMU football in DFW is marginal to say the least. All the years of losing have taken its toll.

Also (( remembering I am a proud alumni)), dont you think a bit dubious to compare SMU to Stanford academically?? Not really in the same arena as far as academics go. Reminds me of PIG PYE constantly comparing SMU to Rice.

I understand where you're coming from. But what do we really gain by playing non-conference opponents that no one gives a damn about?! When we play SFA, Texas State, etc. our diehard fans are the only ones who give a damn win or lose. Look at Rice, Houston, Tulane. Rice plays Michigan and Texas regularly. Houston has played Michigan, Miami, and Oregon in non-conference play recently. Last year Tulane played LSU in the Sugar Bowl. Point being that other teams in our conference are doing this. Why can't we? Also, the fact that SMU is a nonfactor in DFW sports is a good one. All the more reason to schedule an opponent that Dallas sports fans might actually want to see!! You think the casual fan has any interest in seeing SMU vs. SFA? Of course not.

That's why my suggestion is keep the two non-conference local games with TCU and North Texas. Hopefully we can get to the point where North Texas is our pattycake gimme non-conference win and TCU is our natural cross-town rival. These two games will keep us relevant in the DFW college sports scene. Then for the other non-conference games we schedule a major out of the region powerhouse. How awesome would it be to see SMU playing USC, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame, etc?? Even if we get pounded we'd at least be getting people's attention. Also, big powerhouse programs are looking for these type of games every year. They will be heavily favored in a game that gets them recruiting exposure in a new market. If we could arrange a deal with Jerry to play one non-conference game at JerryWorld every year against a premiere national program, I think that program would be foolish to pass up the opportunity. Playing in a game that you have about a 95% chance to win in a major recruiting hotbed in the finest football venue in the world. Call me crazy but I think we'd have most big name national programs beating down our door to play in that game.

To StallionModelT: agreed with some observations.

I like keeping TCU and NTSU as you say. However, getting a bigtime program to come to Dallas and play SMU is more difficult than it sounds.
From all I have heard Jerry Jones is decidedly NOT a fan of SMU. He kept SMU out of Texas Stadium after the DP (even for select games that would have drawn well in the old SWC). The agreement to let OSU play Tech started as a good ole boy deal between TBOONE and JONES who are old buds. OSU and Tech both play in the big 12 so have a chance to fill up the new stadium.

Ohio State and Michigan do not have the large alumni bases in DFW necessary to draw a sellout. If SMU can turn its program around a matchup with UT in the cotton bowl might be a big draw.

Large alumni bases or not, people in Dallas would be interested in watching a Michigan or an Ohio State or a USC play. It wouldn't matter if they went to school there or not. I don't think we'd have a problem selling tickets to a game at JerryWorld if our opponent was Ohio State. I think that game would sell quite well.

OSU, LSU, USC and Michigan aren't coming to Dallas anytime soon to play us, or anyone else for that matter. We'd be lucky to get just one game against one of them at their stadium in the next 10 years.
