Barrier Busting: SMU's Ricky Wesson

Darrell Royal used to call him a "Little Waterbug". I believe he probably had more quickness than any SMU player I've ever seen.

The article reminds me, the pennants or flags of SMU greats inside the concource of the stadium, seem to leave out a number great players. What is the criteria for inclusion? There were at least five players that should have been there in my oppinion, that are not. Also some of these need to replaced, they have really suffered from the weather, especially on the NE side.

I was at that 13-12 loss to UT in Austin. What a heartbreaker.

Wesson was a terrific player. Glad to see he's still close by.

The 1973 and '74 Mustangs were good enough to have played in bowl games. SMU was unbeaten and leading the nation in rushing in 1973 (over Texas and OU) when they lost to undefeated Missouri in Texas Stadium 17-7. The Ponies fumbled five times and lost four of them. That game broke my heart. They lost to a very good Tech team in Lubbock and were destroyed by a marginal A&M team and lead Texas at the half before Rosey Leaks kicked their heads in. Peach Bowl reps came to the Cotton Bowl for the Arkansas game to invite the winner and we wound up tying the Razorbacks 7-7.

The '74 team had that great win over A&M and played Ohio State with Archie Griffin pretty tough, but they just weren't as good, and Wesson is right when he says lack of depth kept the Mustangs from the postseason.

It used to bother the hell out of me that those great players -- Wesson, Kelcher, Maxson & Morris, Roan, Johns, Sheppard, Mickey Early, Bostick, Mike Leitko, et al played before piddling crowds of 13,000 people.

That's not really true.

Back then in the 70s, and I went to most of those games, we averaged
about 25000 per game. 30000 - 45000 vs. Texas, A$M, Arkansas.
Around 20000 was the norm against TCU, Rice, and Baylor, but I do
remember a 7000 game against Rice in the Cotton Bowl which might
have been Thanksgiving weekend or something.

At the end of this clip there are two shots of Trenton passing to Triston on the winning drive in the SPC Championship drive. First time I've seen a live shot of the twins. Man Trenton throws a surprisingly tight beautiful spiral. Better than his Dad-Sorry Ricky.
