Ã¢â‚¬Â¢ Kelan Luker was one of the reasons Stephenville won the 1998 Class 4A state championship. He was named Class 4A offensive player of the year by The Associated Press after leading the offense to 8,664 yards, 4,700 coming off his passing arm. He threw 49 touchdown passes that season, earning a scholarship to SMU.

He started three games as a sophomore, but he left to start a musical career in rock 'n' roll music. Two albums and seven years later, the music business slowed down. His love for football buried for a while, rose up, and now he will play football for Tarleton State and get his degree so he can coach.

He has two seasons of eligibility and he will have to battle returning starter Scott Grantham for the position.

Kelan grew up in a coaches' home. His father, Alan Luker, coached Panther Creek to a pair of state six-man championships, then took a job in Stephenville. He currently is on Robbie Tindol's staff at Early.

How much will the time away from football hurt him? Not as much as you might think. Several years ago, Rex Lamberti left Abilene Christian University only to return five or so years later and performed as if he had not been away.

I am sure he left some bad feelings here, but he'd be the type of QB who would probably thrive in June Jones System. He'd be more experienced than our current back-up.
