Darrell Green apparently spent a lot of time with Dexter helping him learn to read.

True - there was a really nice Congressional hearing (when's the last time you heard THAT?) where he was talking about going through life as a functionally illiterate person, and how Green (and others) had taught him to read. He started to read a speech that he had written, and according to how he described it afterward, he became very self-conscious because he was reading slowly. Senator Paul Simon came over and sat with him and encouraged him to help him get through it. He has had many lapses in his substance abuse, but I thought that performance was more impressive than anything he ever did on a field, and I'm rooting for him to get on the straight and narrow and be successful in whatever he does.

I knew someone would go that route.
You remember Paul Simon - Democrat from Illinois, ran for president, big glasses, ever-present bowtie.

So in the 2008 class, we have guys from Texas (obviously), Louisiana (Free), Arkansas (Lunday), Mississippi (Lee), Ohio (Robiskie), Michigan (Line), California (Huahulu, McElroy), Arizona (Grenier), New Jersey (Robinson) and Virginia (Drewery). Now this guy — good to see Coach Jones making SMU into a national recruiting destination.

This is tons of truth in this statement. Oxon Hill & PG County are about the last places I'd expect SMU to be recruiting. PG County is worse then DC in a lot of respects

Then I take this as another sign that things are looking up.

Um ... "worse" in the sense that there's nothing to do there? True.
"Worse" in reference to crime and poor schools, etc.? Clearly there are some parts of D.C. you've never been to. It's an unbelievable city that everyone should see, that's full of history, has great things to do and places to see ... but there definitely are some parts of town to avoid at all costs. That's true in a lot of cities, I know, but I've been to Oxen Hill and several places in PG County, and they have a sort of country club feel compared to some parts of D.C. Just because this kid is from Oxen Hill doesn't mean he can't hack it academically. I don't know anything about him, other than what I've read here, but there actually are some legit students who come out of there.

I spent the first 18 years of my life in DC, 4 in Dallas, another 10 in DC, and now I live in South Carolina. There is basically no place in DC I haven't been at one time or another. PG County, per capita, is as dangerous as DC at this point. Don't get me wrong, there are decent parts of PG County, but its worst parts are on par w/any part of SE, Anacostia etc.

Bad scholastics = good recruits. If they are on the edge I am glad we are recruiting them.

I've pretty much lived in DC my entire life except my college and grad school years. I sold pots and pans one summer in PG county and know about PG county. In fact, I live right across the river from PG county. Yes, in southern PG county along the River there are some nice areas. Oxen Hill isn't one of them, yet. The murder rate in PG county matches DC. Oxen Hill had sevral people killed during a street race just a few weeks ago. The school system tests among the lowest in the State of Maryland. All I'm saying is that the kid will probably need some remedial help. Its not like he's graduating from Riverdale Baptist, a solid academics private school in PG County, or DeMatha, or Good Counsel all of which are good Catholic prep schools in PG County.

I spent a year in Hyattsville. Man, that was a LONG year.
