Between Sol's, Omega's, Pepe's & Mito's, and Monica's, there is plenty of good Tex-Mex in Deep Ellum.

There is one in Hurst, also. It is not good AT ALL. Crummy food, horrible service. Looks nice from the outside, though.

I have made the study of Mexican food my life's work. So here goes.

Manny's is good. Owned in part by the GREAT Bob Sharp of PonyFans fame. So it's a must go for that reason alone. Great patio.

While I was at SMU, I spent many a Friday night sitting on top of a cooler at the old Herrera's. And while the place has lost 90% of its charm, the prices have gone way up, and grandma is no longer around making her handmade tortilla's, it's still worth a trip. Especially when you bring your own 12-pk of Pacifico. Order the Herrera's #1 if you're hungry. I go with a 2C or a #13 if less hungry. Fantastic HOT salsa. Best straight up cheese enchilada on the planet, no other is even close –they use, good, sharp cheddar. They also use really fresh vegetables, which you wouldn't normally expect in a "dive".

Other than Bob Armstrong dip, Matt's Lakewood is crap.

The Matt's on Cedar Springs has a chile relleno stuffed with chicken, cheese, raisins, and is covered with some sort of creme sauce with almonds. Very good. They should serve that at Lakewood to make it less crappy.

Chuy's. Good food, big plates, eye candy. Go with the Comida Deluxe or the Elvis Presley memorial combo.

Lastly, no summary of Dallas Tex Mex is complete without mention the fabulous Pepe & Mito's in Deep Ellum. And yes, lots of people still go to Deep Ellum if for no other reason. Try the chipotle enchiladas (best unique Tex Mex dish in Dallas) or the chorizo nachos (not on the menu, just ask for it and you won't be sorry).

P.S. All you posters who were born in Washington, New Jersey, etc., should not be allowed to post on this thread because you don't know what you're talking about. No offense, ya'll were sadly genetically deprived of properly calibrated taste buds.

Oh, and Gloria's also rocks if you're in the mood for something a little different. Whatever they season their pork, skirt steak and shrimp with is superb. Killa mango-rita, but at $8, they get a little steep after awhile.

Best chip and dips setup due to the hot black bean / salsa combo.

Stupendous happy hour as they stuff you with the aforementioned black bean /salsa combo AND frozen ritas are like $2.

By the way, my sentimental favorite is El Fenix on Northwest Highway at Hillcrest. Been eating their bean and cheese nachos since I can remember.

I like Luna de Noche. Found a little place at Preston & Campbell called Tortilla Soup. Reminds me a lot of Mi Cocina. Others are Mario & Chiquita's, Dos Rios in Richardson, and Mexi-go in Allen.

Everyone, please, can we all agree to just say "no" to Mexican food chain resturants; there's plenty of locally owned authentic places to go around.

In Grapevine, I'm a fan of the fish tacos at the Baja Mexican Grill on W.D.Tate Ave.

Perhaps someone here can help me on this: I went to a Tex-Mex place that was in a house near Love Field once...I think it was west of Inwood Road and perhaps north or south of University Blvd. Went there back in the '70s with some buddies and it was awesome! Only about 20 people could sit there at a time and the line was out the door at lunch which was the only time they served meals. Does anyone know what place I'm talking about and the name of it and is it still there?
