How many sports do we have left to go then?
Orsini took a leap in the wrong direction by letting Schellas go. My guess is that men's soccer was our highest rated / highest profile sport. SteveO took two steps forward with June, but slid at least 1 or 2 steps backwards botching men's soccer. Not to say the new coach won't do well, be we arguably had the best men's soccer coach in the nation on staff.
How exactly were we supposed to "step up" and keep a guy from going to the pros? I've got news for you, if the Dallas Cowboys come calling and want June Jones next year, they can get him, and there's virtually nothing Steve-O or anyone else can do to stop him. That's the nature of the game.

soccer is at most an 1/8 step in the US vis a vis football

I dunno. Maybe the same reason he turned down pro teams every time they came calling in the past. Maybe because he's said on multiple occasions that he wanted to retire at SMU. Just doesn't seem like keeping him would have been that tough if SteveO went to the mat to keep him.
And sure, soccer may not rank up there with football as far as high profile revenue sports go, but it is one of the few Top 25 programs we did/do have, and of them, it is the highest profile.
I see it from a sales standpoint... If it's 8X easier to resale an existing client than it is to target and close a new customer, I figure it's at least that much easier to maintain a Top 25 team than to build one up from the cellar.

Glad you have adopted Steve-O's Top 25 mantra - probably at the Mustang Club meetings you regularly attend. Do not suggest for a moment, however, that you have higher standards and/or expectations. Screaming about your "posting accuracy" (that confused almost as much as your "anyone of this board" comment above) or about your "model" or about your "analysis" of recruits you've never seen play does not equal credibility. It just shows repetition, and if that made someone right, then the guys on late-night infomercials would be hailed as prophets with their hair-in-a-can and over-night-real-estate-millionaire plans.

Ladanian Tomlinson had a huge role in putting TCU where it currently is. He would not and in fact did not get into SMU, where he was also heavily recruited. Academic standards. Boom. Over the last umpteen years we've had higher academic standards and every one of our coaches have said so. Bennet harped on it every year. You can't honestly say that academic standards haven't been a factor in our sub-par recruiting over the years.
You have made several completely false statements in the above. First of all SMU never offered nor even recruited LT. Second of all, LT had very good grades and test scores and would have easily qualified for SMU.
Steve Brickey recruited LT while he was the QB coach at TCU under Pat Sullivan. When he 1st saw him it was during his JR year at University and he was playing guard, point guard that is for the HS BB team. Football season was over and that year he was an all-district LBer and PT RB.
He didn't play full-time RB until his SR year which is the primary reason no one really was on him, even though he ran for over 2,400 yards and was district MVP. Also before his SR year his mother moved to Garland and Brickey would visit her there as often as allowed.
Basically TCU was the only team on him early and though he had offers from Kansas State, UTEP, UNT and BU also, they were never really considered by him. Had UT offered it may have been different and they did look at him as a LBer but did not offer. When LT first got to TCU he was wanted by the LBer coach at the time, but Shultz won out on that one which proved to be very fortunate for all.
SMU was never in the game at all and your baseless comments about his grades are really way off the mark, clueless and classless.

One thing that anybody who expected JJ to come to Texas and have an immediate recruiting impact does not know the reality of the situation here. You need to give the man more than a few months before you even start to initially make a judgement on him and the recruiting.
Every large program in the nation is down here recruiting alongside the local schools. Big XII is king here and UT, OU & TAMU are the top dogs. Add to that the fact that Mo and Kansas have emphasized Texas talent recently and having found success breaking into even the Top 300 kids is a huge challenge, much less the Top 100.
Give the man some time. I fully expect he will pull of one or two big surprises before this year is done and next year will be a lot better.

How can a team offer but not "really consider"?

Keep reading, it says "by him". Or let me put it in simpler terms: there were other teams after him, but he (meaning LT) really didn't think about going to those schools very long.

Assuming what you wrote about LT and his starting as a RB only at the beginning of his senior year in HS is correct (I assume it is as I don't recall anyone knowing much about him at the time), then the ratings of "to be" seniors can be grossly in error. Again, except for really exceptional athletes, how can anyone rate the majority of college prospects before their senior year?

Recruits sometime commit on hope and a coaches rep. Look at Dukes 2009
commits 3 top 150 and about 6 or 7 rated in the 70's. New coach new hope
that is more talent than Dukes had in the last 10 years. SMU wins the talent
will come.

Good comments and TCU/CGP have made a nice living trying to find a lot of these late developers/hidden gems, etc. So many kids continue to develop through their SR year and on through the first years of college that you are correct, it is impossible to get even a majority of them properly analyzed and rated.
Jason Phillips the stud LBer at TCU was a QB/safety in HS and 50 pounds lighter. He kept growing his SR year and even through his freasman season and hasn't missed a start since he hit the campus. No one recruited him as a LBer and TCU wanted him at safety.
