Rice Game Watching Party

Postby Eddie P » Sat Aug 02, 2008 1:37 am

Kiddos,

Unfortunately, I cannot make the Rice game later this month. I could arrange so that I would arrive at the Houston airport right around gametime, but that would be fairly useless.

I figured I should watch the game somewhere in Uptown, where I frequently roam. So, I have struck an agreement with Christies Sports Bar and Grill to have the mustang faithful come and cheer on the team. They will have all TV's and audio throughout the bar for the entire SMu game. They will also have $2 Miller Lite, Coors Lite and $3 "Good" vodka anythings all night.

Now, I am more than aware that parties have been held at places like Pluckers, 1st and ten, public house, etc etc. However, I live in uptown and I believe that quite a few of our alumni do as well. To my knowledge, no event has been held in this neighborhood. This is what i am offering: a safe, friendly upscale place to cheer on the Mustangs.

Also, I have no stake in this whatsoever. I do not own a cool party planning company a la Rogers Healy...it's not something I'm capable of doing well. I'm simply offering an option for any uptown Mustangs who cant make the Rice game and want a non-harassed place to watch the game. And with a venue where SMU is the priority for that night.

Lastly, I would hope that those who can make the trip do indeed make the short trip to watch the Rice game. But if you cant, you will be welcome at this event.

Take care.

Alex,

With all due respect, I think I emphasized quite emphatically that I too wish people to go to the game if possible. If people cannot, i am simply offering an alternative other than the usual Plucker/ 1st and 10 venues. Like most people, I like to indulge my vices as close to my home as possible. Since I live on the corner of hall and Thomas...actually, you can see exactly where i live because theres an SMU billboard attached to the building.

So again, I'm just trying to find a good place for us to cheer on the mustangs.

Love,

Ed

Somewhere along the way SMU football needs to become a priority - Rice is an "easy-to-get-to" game - from the Dallas area. Just like Ford Stadium, we need Mustang butts-in-seats at Rice Stadium on August 29. Make the effort - the team will be doing the same.

The majority of SMU alums living in Dallas don't even attend home games...........the problem is considerably larger than somebody trying to organize a game watching party in Dallas. Maybe if the game was on a Saturday instead of during the work week, more people would be able to attend.

Maybe, but it's not. The game is on Friday. The SMU Mustangs open their 2008 season on Friday. Friday. It's not gonna change.
The problem is that many SMU fans had rather find an excuse NOT to go (it's too hot - it's on a Friday - I can't take off work - etc.) than to be a little creative and enthusiastic and get to the game. But, I guess these are not the REAL fans. Real fans find a way. Do something different. See you in Houston. For those who find an excuse not to go, enjoy the game on ESPN.

Wow, pretty crummy, holier than thou attitude there buddy. i've probably attended more away SMu athletic events than most "fans" have attended home games. But yeah, you're a real fan and anybody who cant make the rice game cant possibly be a true fan. Spare me, please.

That is why I said "POSSIBLE". If there is ANY way a fan of SMU, can make it to Houston, we need you there. If it is IMPOSSIBLE to make it, then enjoy it on the tube. I wasn't trying to start a war here. I am taking off work, and going to see the start of the June Jones era, and there's not much that could stop me! Go Mustangs!

No need to crawl. The Mustang Club is making it easy--just take the bus.

Eddie P.:

I commend you for arranging a game-watching party at Christie's. I'm sure your reason for not being able to make it to Rice is a good one or else you would not have said anything. I'll keep my fingers crossed that your plans will change and that you'll be able to join the rest of us at Rice for JJ's premiere.

I've never been to Christie's so I hope there will be other game-watching parties held there. Perhaps the Tulane game?
