DMN: Season Ticket Sales Up by 50% at S.M.U.

Postby MrMustang1965 » Sun Aug 10, 2008 3:15 am

from the DMN:

UNIVERSITY PARK – Anticipation of the June Jones era has sent football season-ticket sales skyrocketing. Athletic director Steve Orsini said sales were up 50 percent from last season, from about 5,000 in 2007 to 7,500 so far in 2008. He credited the hiring of Jones as coach in January and an intense marketing campaign with the surge in sales.

I called into the ticket office the first Monday after they lost their last game last year and asked to be put on the waiting list for season tickets. (Before JJ was hired.)

They kind of giggled and said I was #2 on the list; they would call me when they went on sale this year. About 7 weeks later I received a call with seats on the 50 in the 8th row isle just as I requested.

I understand from a valid source that all of the seats between the 20s on the home side are now sold out. Glad I got mine when no one else wanted them 8)

hopefully those people will actually show up - or might be positioning themselves for when we get good.

What is the average student attendance for each home game. The student body needs to be in the stands making noise.

First half - maybe 500
Second half - 2

That is my fear also, but there is little that can be done about that. At least it means that people are thinking about SMU Football again. I do think that when people come and experience game day at SMU they will come back.

Hopefully that will be accompanied by the end of having opposing fans sit in those sections. I can't remember a game when I haven't seen 5 or more people in my immediate vicinity cheering for the opponent.

I have particularly vivid recollection of some UH fans two years ago who were among the most obnoxious I have ever seen. When we had our big comeback they completely shut up, only to come back with avengeance when that ridiculous play (3rd and 26 or whatever) happened. Reall y annoyed me, because they pretended they knew they would win the whole time.

I would like to think that I bough my seats in 103 expressly to avoid being near those people.

This always has been and will continue to be a problem. Many of the season tickets are purchased by local businesses that give their tickets to clients who most of the time are fans of the opposing team. The way to overcome it is to pack the stadium with the majority of SMU fans so we drown out the opposition. I have had more than one occassion that the opposing team's fans in my section (104) have out yelled our fans. That is other than our fans yelling "down in front".

I always try to be courteous and polite, when it comes to standing and blocking some ones view of the game.

But I believe in being a spirited participant. So if I feel it’s time to stand I’m going to do so. And if some one tells me to sit down during one of these short spirited up rising, one of three things will happen. They will learn to stand and cheer, get used to it, or be physically fit enough to sit me down.

MrYdell I think I’m in your section this year

The sad but true reality in my opinion is that the SMU PD needs to lessen their enforcement regarding alcohol/being drunk in order to keep students in the stands. I'm not saying they should allow booze in the stadium(which would be great, but isn't very plausible), but at least let the students get as loud and crazy as they want. I have seen many fellow students get thrown out of games(more so at Bball games) only for being loud and crazy. This is a joke. The rowdier the better. Just my 2 cents
