PonyFans.com feature: STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING REPORT

Postby PonyPride » Fri Aug 15, 2008 1:06 am

SMU strength and conditioning coach Vic Viloria visited recently with PonyFans.com to discuss who performed the best in the team's recent tests in strength, speed and overall conditioning. PonyFans has acquired a list of the leaders, and discussed with Viloria how the Ponies' strength program has changed after the arrival of the new coaching staff.

Interesting that Sanders isn't on the top ten list for 40 times. Did he test in that?

Nope - Sanders didn't run, nor did Aldrick Robinson. Also, Zac Thomas didn't test, either, or he likely would have been at or near the top of some of the lifts.

Fascinating story ... and numbers.

Taylor Thompson benches over 400 already ... and ran the third-fastest 40 on the team? (I know, Sanders and Robinson didn't run, but that's still amazing).

Good to see Andrew Robiskie in there. Didn't realize he was that strong.

How about Cole Beasley with the 501-pound squat. Unreal.

Sounds like Fleps has really lived in the weight room. Keep it up.

Thanks, PF.com guys.

The three particularly impressive young players who could really improve our athleticism on Defense I think are:

1. Julian Herron

Power Clean 308 (6th)
Forty 4.4 (2nd)
Vertical 38 (2nd)
Broad Jump (2nd)

2. Taylor Thompson

Forty 4.46 (3rd)
Bench 405 (7th)

3. Chris Banjo

Forty 4.52 (5)
Vertical 33.5 (8th)

Not surprising all those guys had plenty of Division 1A offers to choose from. Need about 10 more guys each year like that. Torlan Pittman also has very impressive strength-wished he were about two inches taller. Quite frankly the 40 times from most our skill position players is pretty mediocre. Again, can't tell who did or didn't participate but please tell me we have more than 1 returning letterman that ran these drills who runs a 4.59 or better on either side of the ball.

The 40 times aren't mediocre, they're alarming. Bryan McCann? Bell? Rock? None of our returning receivers, aside from sanders and robinson? Butler? I'm sure I'm missing more, but there are quite a few more players I would have assumed could crack a 4.6. Hoping they all didn't test...

On a sidenote, Herron needs to get on the field.

I'm sure Herron will see plenty of the field as the season progresses. I think he is still kind of raw and trying to get a solid handle on the D

That's pretty impressive for a guy his size (5' 9" 155) but not unheard of. When I was 16 I was close to the same size (5' 9" 180) and I could squat a bit over 500 lbs. Not to say I had Cole's speed, agility and general football ability though  .
Larry Brown? We have Larry Brown? Cool!

well, just right here we see two of most important WRs didn't run:
"Nope - Sanders didn't run, nor did Aldrick Robinson. Also, Zac Thomas didn't test, either, or he likely would have been at or near the top of some of the lifts."

I'm guessing a lot of lettermen didn't run...I'm guessing the ones shown here are overrepresented by underclassmen/freshman. not enough info to cause alarm

Which is the one downside of physical stats. Until they have a stat that can measure whether a kid's a baller or not, you have to take into account the fact that stats are only part of the picture.

Case in point: former Cowboys Bill Bates (good player, bad stats) and Alexander Wright (400 lb. bench and 2-time winner of NFL's fastest man competition, who never got more than 500 yards receiving in a season).
