One thing and the only thing you guys need to know about JJ is that SMU will live and die by the R&S. He is a true believer in his system. The whole football team is geared to the R&S. The main job of the defense is to get the ball back so the offense can score. That is why the D is a high stakes gambling D that is geared to make turnovers. It is the job of the defense to have the opposition score one less point than the R&S. Everything is to give the ball to the O so it can score. So expect the D to give up a lot of yardage and points and hope they win the turnover battle. Make sure you take your heart medicine. If you don't have any, get some. It won't be boring. I guarantee that. You will be squeezing your @$$e$ to the last second. The last one with the ball wins the game.
The Special Teams is geared to kick the ball without any turnovers or penalties so the defense can get the ball back for the offense. There were no attempts to block kicks in Hawaii. Maybe a couple times in JJ's nine seasons at Hawaii. With Gantz coaching ST, that might change.
In the beginning it will get ugly. By the second half of the season watchout. The Oline should be gelling and the R&S should be cranking. When it works, its a thing of beauty. If the Oline cannot get it together, kiss the season goodbye. This is JJ's first season. The fact that no one in the conference have never played against JJ's brand of R&S is already an advantage for SMU.
In JJ's first year at Hawaii, he had no time to recruit. Usually he recruits at least 6 or 7 QBs including walkons but he didn't have time. His moto was that you can never have enough QBs. He converted a RB to LB who turned out to be a starter. He converted a DE to OT. After one season as a partime starter, the OT entered the NFL draft as a junior and was picked in the sixth round. He turned a walkon WR into an all WAC 2nd round draft pick. There are many stories like that. He turned a Hawaii basketball player who never played organized football and turned him into a DE NFL draft pick. He went to the Sugar Bowl on a $60,000 recruiting budget. They recruited with CDs and on the internet.
It's going to be ugly and every week will be a heart attack but keep the faith, every season will be better than the previous. SMU has so much MONEY and the facilities! I'm excited already!!!!
It's the end of the end and the beginning of the beginning!

Thanks for the insight hawaiisashimi_smu.
Great stuff!
Please continue to share your unique perspectiive.
Besides the games being ugly at first, I'm afraid the short-sighted doom and gloom platoon will be out in full force as well.
But I guess that shouldn't be a surprise.
Now....I gotta go get my heart medicine!
Go Stangs!

After JJ beats Rice, watch how many more fans get on board with JJ. I'm there now.

Justin is just a marginally talented QB who over-achieved on the field and under-achieved off of it. I know this much, he didn't win many football games, and he will probably be yet another SMU QB to transfer to sam houston or wherever and end up in the NFL (McCown, Bartel). Or who knows, he might end up jammin' with Kelan Lukar. Who knows?
Basically, I think he's a head-case and I'm ready to move on.

Jones said BLM had a strong arm and was accurate and understood the offense. He also said that Willis was 1 or 2 plays away from starting. Apparently he started Timmy Chang as a freshman and he lit it up at Hawaii. I have not seen the competition, so I can't compare these guys, but Jones did and Morrision did and they came out with BLM as the starter and Smith as #2. I can't fault them at all. I like JW and hope that he is utliized by the team somehow. There may be teams that JJ might choose to play Willis because the teams have a great pass rush and his escapability might be helpful. Or perhaps JJ will utilize him in other ways. Holder on place kicks with fakes. He can contribute if he gets past this setback.
Hawaii was 3-9 that season. Prepare yourselves.

Many people predicted 3-9 ormaybe 4-8 when we thought Willis would be starting. This year was always intended as a year of learning. The difference in wins will come from the defensive side of the ball if they can improve.

and thats is what many people on this board are over looking. Sure we might start a true frosh but I think this type of O will put points on the board no matter who the starter is. This season will rely mostly on the D IMO
