I agree with Stallion. I think we have more kids postioned more for their talent than we did last year. Justin Smart should not have been forced to play at all last year and certainly not at DE. I have no real basis to say this since I can not see the practices, but it just sounds that he is better suited at MLB and has had the opportunity to get himself into college size. Speed and agressiveness on defensive can make up for mistakes. Granted, too many mistakes make for too many big plays, but I for one being an old defensive guy, am looking forward to this years group. I believe it was in 1971 that Hayden took all the "big guys" and put them on offense. He put Ray Utley in charge of the defense. Our small quick defense was one of the best in the SWC that year, and almost (other than 2 bad calls) beat powerhouse UT. Hopefully these guys can improve on last years embarassment.

Who was the last coach to win his debut as SMU's head football coach?

Bobby Collins - 1982 vs. Tulane, 51-7 win. Of course, we didn't lose a game that year.

Was it Cavan vs. Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl in 97
Cavan, a former QB like JJ, who benched SMU record leading offense
producer RFlann for 5 or 6 games in favor of a freshman only to
reinstate him. That was when things got serious for SMU to go to a
bowl.
God, I hate first year at a school coaches, especially former QBs who
are too used to being the perfectionist prima donna bossing people
around.
History repeats itself, but at least JJ isn't installing the I formation.

It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!

he didn't bench Flanigan he alternated Sanders into the mix sometimes. I still think it cost us a bowl.

No, Cavans first game as the head coach at SMU was against Ole Miss in a night game in Oxford to start the 97 season. The next week, SMU played a "home" game against Arkansas - I believe that Danny Ford was the head coach - and SMU kicked their a$$e$ all over the field that night and won 31-9.

You're welcome
I hated Bennett too at first. Especially after the Navy game to start his
first season through the Ofer year. Coaches always throw the baby out
with the bath water their first years somewhere.

we will know how talented all of our 1st year players might be and whether coaching really does make a huge difference - that is what we are all counting on, right?

The thing about this tired refrain is that it's not funny or controversial or otherwise interesting in any way. It's somewhere between boring and sad. Oh yeah, it's also inaccurate. Rice is a fantastic university, and its band is clever, unique and very funny. chillinfool wrote:We'll know we're 0-1 in conferance play, and this year will be ANOTHER "rebuilding" season.
You do realize it's a rebuilding season whether or not we win the opener, right?
