There will be a change to the way the team enters during pregame. They will now run through the band's Diamond M.

Peruna is going nowhere. He was at Convocation tonight.

Sure that's true. It sounded to me that there is more planned than just how the team enters.

Regardless, isn't it great we are about to start a new season with a great new coach, a team and administration with a new attitude, and the knowledge that all sports on the Hilltop are looking up?

Puruna is our mascot and nees no improvement or no additions.

If our current one cant run then time to pass the bridle on to a newer younger version. If they wont let us run it - we need to tell them to shove it and do it anyway. The circle of champions will pay the fine for us.

And there is no mascot anywhere that intimidates anyone. And also - there is no way JJ could care less about any of this - I think he is more concerned with our actual football team.

I apologize in advance but Peruna sucks. I have always hated seeing that little pony run up the football field.

We are the SMU Mustangs and I can't understand why they chose a miniature pony as our mascot. It would be like UT running a newborn calf up and down the field.

I know it's tradition but having a real mustang/horse would be awesome.

As far as JJ not caring about things like mascots, you couldn't be further from the truth. When he went to UH he changed the logo, the colors and had someone come up with special music to be played during football games.

I say we put Peruna up at the top of the hill with the Bouncing play house(as entertainment for the small pony fans).

It is called TRADITION

Peruna has been with us since the 1930's. Peruna has been all over the U.S including meeting Mayor Laguardia for the Fordham game in New York.

The stupid Aggies have it right. They are the Farmers/Aggies and they have a dog. Why? Because it is tradition. They don't have some idiot dress up like a farmer (like those silly Cornhuskers in Nebraska).

If Peruna was good enough for:

Bobby Wilson
Doak Walker
Don Meredith
Jerry Levias/Chuck Hixson
Maxson/Morris
Mike Ford
The Pony Express

It's good enough for me.

More COWBELLS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or better yet let's build a GOLDEN IDOL in the form of a Giant Mustang to appease the Football Gods and lead the Mustangites out of the wildeness!!!!!!!!!

...and Staler while I agree 100% with your post about the dumb asses that don't understand our traditions, BUT I think its Alvin Maxson and Wayne Morris(the M&M Boys) not Maxon and Morrison. Not to mention Chuck Hixson. Geez-who are you people. You know how many kids are going to cry if we put Peruna out to pasture? If there is any truth to this I may boyvott our scrimmage with Texas State Penitentiary.

If there IS more planned, I've heard nothing of it. It will be interesting to find out.

Once again, I ask how it would be possible to have a full sized mustang on the sidelines. Are we going to use a team of people to restrain it? Having a full size normal broken horse with no rider would be no different than having a more docile Peruna that you couldn't run across the field. What would even be the point?

Oh yeah, most students' primary football allegience is to another school instead of SMU, and that's more like how ________ does it.

This is silly. First of all, there is no reason to change a tradition. I really doubt that JJ cares what the horse looks like that is on the field. Plus, if you're going to get a full-size horse, you'll need to find money for stables/food and people to handle the horse (which you can't really run across, somebody would have to ride it). As it has been said a hundred times before (when this is brought up on its yearly schedule), this is not a possible reality. Quit complaining about a good tradition.

A full grown horse as a mascot is stupid. One, you can’t ride it; it is supposed to be a Mustang. Mustangs are wild horses (or did we forget that?). Second, you can’t run it across the field; it is a freakin’ full grown horse. A run of the mill horse is going to easily weigh more than a 1,000 pounds and run faster than 30 miles an hour. Anybody that wants to run along side that is a moron. So you are left with a drugged up horse standing in the endzone. Brilliant.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I for one can not imagne changing Peruna, however, let us not get caught up in the definition of a Mustang, since Peruna is not one either. Someone in charge might just want a big, black horse with as rider. Hopefully not.

That would be a cruel thing to do to Peruna...making him carry a heavy load like me on his back. Now that Olympic girl doing flippie things has some potential. 8)
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Transfer the current horse to a petting stall in the south end zone. POLEEZE no more half [deleted] running of the pony. It looks bad when the people are PULLING the pony down the field.

Just let the kids go pet the pony and feed it a carrot.

We've won two national championships with Peruna as our mascot. Peruna while not as well known as BEVO, Ralphie, or Uga, is one of the most enduring mascots of college. He's had more kills than any of those mascots. He's gotten nasty with the Baylor Bear, he's attempted the nasty with Misty (the Tech Horse). Peruna is cool. Spike Lee is not tall, but he's got a pretty extensive babe resume. Tom Cruise isn't tall, but he's done some pretty good list of hotties on his rolodex. Sylvester Stallone is short. Peruna is cool. Keep tradition alive. Don't mess with the best.
