Most of the other 50% don’t know when to cheer or what.

We can’t generate any kind of noise at kickoff. We can’t generate any kind of noise on third down. Nobody knows any of the cheers; nobody knows the words to the fight song; nobody knows the words to Varsity.

Annoying, isn't it? It drove me crazy when I was in school and none of my friends (the ones I could drag to football games) had a clue about the cheers or songs. I don't know how to fix it, other than winning.

It is even worse at the general commencement ceremony every spring. The program is supposed to end with the crowd/students singing Varsity. Unfortunately, even with the words printed in the program, no one seems to be able to find the energy to sing along.

Winning would fix it, but only if the winning was consistent for a period long enough for some pride to develop. One or two good years won't cut it.

I swear to you that my three year old knows more of the fight song than most alumni. And he sings it with conviction.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Walk him around the Boulevard and then build him a place of honor in the south endzone for further exposure to fans.

Bus, I agree with many of your posts, especially your call for more BIG men. However, I can't agree with not running Peruna. If our current mascot cannot or will not run, then she should be changed. But, run Peruna.

My 2 year old will learn more of them this fall. She and the 6 year old know how to find the SMU playlist on the iPod, and often sing along. The 6 year old can put some of the fans to shame, but she's always been a gifted child. When she was 4 months old she attended her first SMU game. Sat in my lap watching the movement on the field. At the end of each play, she would turn her head to watch the replay on the screen, then return to watching the field. We were very proud parents. <sniff>

Peruna will run, he has always and will always want to run. His speed is limited by the speed of the handlers, not the other way around.

(I'm not taking a shot at the handlers, it just seems that some people don't understand that a human can not run as fast as a horse, not even faster than a shetland pony.)

Peruna is simply one of our best (and one of the few) traditions we have going. Want to see Peruna running early and often this year.

Given that SO and Co. seem intent on drawing attention to SMU's history, I find it unlikely that they would mess with a tradition such as Peruna. And, as one who has some experience with Shetland Ponies, any of you out there who mock them should try standing in front of a dozen or so in full fledged stampede. Not fun. Especially not when you're 12.

And, on a different note (pun) would someone please put up a link to the SMU fight song and other songs. Thanks.

Money is very, very hard to find at SMU.

And FYI, Peruna still has stables, food, and staff to care for it...

Peruna running is great. And its even better when he is dragging his handlers along or when he goes on an unexpected course, like the time he ran through the middle of the Rice band. I doubt they enjoyed being in his path. I remember we lined up to create a chute one time for the team to run out and Peruna led them, let me tell you, seeing Peruna running up close, nostrils flaring, eyes focused is a tad intimidating. He may seem like a quiet docile little pony who kids can pet, but when he gets moving, he's a miniature stallion and you don't want to be in front of him.

When I was in school one of my roommates was a Peruna handler and he was a finalist in the Missouri state 440. Peruna would pull him along. At that time to be a Peruna handler you had to have a track background.

Which leads to another thing - we need to junk the PC notion that there should be any equality about peruna handlers - they should be guys who can run - not any dumpy chicks who will embarrass the university at the worst possible time.

And you just are not an SMU fan if you dont like Peruna. Nuff said.

Agreed. Although I do get a good laugh over the ones that have no business running the pony getting dragged down the field. What can I say? I have a warped sense of humor.
