I call [deleted]!

My kids attend Hillcrest High School in DISD and they're as white as the day is long. Yes, they attend a 'diversely populated' high school. And guess what? They have NO PROBLEM WITH IT!

Hillcrest is an anomaly in the DISD. Along with WT White and Woodrow Wilson and a majority of their respective feeder schools, they are not going to be reflective of the districts makeup. Why? Well, they are the 3 schools that are in areas where the majority of residents are Anglo. While they may not be in the "majority," population wise, they will still have a significant number of Anglo students.
Looking at the numbers for Hillcrest from when I was in school back in 1988 to present day, the change is extreme. Back then, the majority of students were African-American and the next largest group were Anglos. I remember feeling weird my freshman year when I was probably one out of 30 some odd Hispanics(if that many) in the entire student body. By the time I'd graduated, the balance started to shift as Hillcrest started getting more Hispanics, mostly ESL students. Today, the school is majority Hispanic with African-American and Anglo being the next 2 largest groups.
I, for one, was grateful to end up there. Since I had managed to get into the Honors courses, I ended up doing alright. Fortunately, I got to become acquainted with some of the more influential people and it helped out a lot(one of my classmates was Field Scovell, the grandson of Field Scovell, the chairman of the competition committee for the Cotton Bowl) In cases like that, it's not always what you know but who you know. For that, I was grateful.

Whether parents fled the DISD because of race or because of affluence it doesnt matter really. The bottom line is that we have a long way to go before we are really integrated. I hear time and time again that the black kids prety much stay to themselves in many of the suburban schools. My country club is officially integrated, but I rarely see a black guy on the course or at the parties. Last but not least, the church seems to be the least integrated place that any of us visit. I will never understand why the churches don't do more to bring in membership of other races.

Well, I am a product of DISD, so what do you expect?
