This game should[and I emphasize should] come down to who's the better coach and I'll take JJ in this one hands down.

It's an experienced QB and no D against a freshman QB and no D. JJ's system will certainly need to be up and running or this could get ugly quickly.

What was the bailiff's name on People's Court? Always thought that was a cool job.

Bailiff is a buffoon who cost TX State a berth in the Div. 1-AA National Championship game because he couldn't manage the clock and coach his team at the same time.

That coach would have never put his team in position to blow a playoff type game. Although Rice two years ago was that type of game, I still say the players made it there in spite of their coaching not because of it...

I, like you, am hoping for an improved D. I just see the improvement taking a few weeks. Clement/Dillard may have a big day.

Yes, but, he chose to run out the clock with 1:25 to go, tied, with the ball on his 30-35, and wait for Overtime RATHER THAN try and get 25-30 yards and kick to win it.

When asked after the game why he didn't try to win it in regulation, he said that he thought his chances were better in OT and he didn't want to risk a turnover.

Asked if he'd do it again (after the loss in OT) he said he wouldn't change a thing...

What an idiot.

Bailiff had a QB in that game (can't remember his name) who completed a perfect 2:00 drill to tie it up. Bailiff showed a lack of confidence in his QB and his team by his actions.

Maybe pf.com poster beamout2000 can shed some light on that debacle.

What you guys say is accurate about why Bailiff decided to take the knee rather than try to drive the ball. The whole thing didn't make me happy at the time either, nor did it many Bobcat Fans. As it turns out he was partially right. After Northern Iowa scored in overtime we threw an interception on a busted passing play to end the game. The quarterbacks name was Barrick Neeley who transferred to Texas State from UH after he injured his knee his freshman year at UH. He was the greatest QB in Texas State history as far as the ability to lead the team and put points on the board and make things happen on the field. That was a great year but the end was pretty terrible.
With that said I know Bailiff and his family and they are all great people and I hope he does well at Rice. He is a better coach than you give him credit for and he is one hell of a recruiter and if anyone can build that program into something it's David Bailiff.

Not better in terms of championships. Mueller and Ron Jacoby (who had an undefeated National Championship season, Mueller lost one game in his National Championship Season) ran a totally different style offense and weren't counted on to do as much as Nealey was. Back in those days we ran the veer under Jim Wacker which was more option run than pass. Neeley ran a wide open read option and was a Vince Young kind of QB. You never knew if he was going to pass or run and he could turn nothing into a touchdown. As far as sheer ability Neeley was better but as far as winning championships both Mueller and Jacoby have the rings.

I'm impressed. I think there are some posters on this site don't have the knowledge of our own early 80s teams (other than basic knowledge) that you have of yours.

I remember seeing SWTSU beat Northern Michigan 62-0 in San Marcos, which temporarily made SWTSU my second favorite college football team.
