So what did we learn tonight?

Postby Vitale » Sun Sep 07, 2008 2:41 am

- That Bo Levi Mitchell kid has a hell of an arm.

- Aldrick Robinson and Emmanuel Sanders are the best 1-2 WR punch at SMU in eons.

- The Mustang Band, the self-titled "best-dressed band in the land" — complete with 155,283 uniform changes — and the cheerleaders, which combined to make the "Hub of SMU spirit" apparently didn't get the memo about the change in blue. Maybe it's with their TPS reports.

- Pete Fleps should have played last year. He's big, he's strong, and he can run. Seriously, how many thought he would catch that running back from behind when that guy shot through the defense? I certainly didn't. That dude's going to make a lot of plays this year.

- Youri Yenga is going to make a lot of teams regret not recruiting him.

- Derrius Bell also should have played more last year. He was excellent.

- We need to sign a bunch of defensive linemen and linebackers.

- Tommy Poynter ended the game in street clothes. Anyone know what happened to him?

- That pregame guitar/song guy was horrible. Absolutely horrible.

- With a little more practice to fine-tune the timing, Terrance Wilkerson might be a really strong third receiver.

- Kelvin Beachum has more fire and nastiness than I ever thought he would.

- DeMyron Martin's hop over the guy near the goal line was impressive. Didn't know he had that agility. Made a couple of really nice catches out of the backfield, too.

- For the love of god, bring back Dan Bell.

- "Hawaii Five-0"? Think the A&M band broke out a rendition of the music from Green Bay Packers commercials? June Jones is our coach now, not Hawaii's.

That the continuation of the Pony Up slogan has officially run its course (in one night no less).

Dan Bell has been battling cancer for awhile now. Doubt he'll be back anytime soon. Dan, if you're reading this, our prayers are with you!

When the Mustang Band began playing the Hawaii Five-Oh theme, John Rohr (son of the late Jack Rohr, asst. director of the Mustang Band for many years) was sitting across the aisle from me and said, "Dad is spinning in his grave right now!"

They were working on his left knee before half time.

I learned that the Defense was worse this year than last year which few felt was possible.

I also learned that Texas State may have very well beat us at home if they had taken better care of the ball.

Bo does look like he will be a good player and Sanders and Robinson look outstanding....but the defense being so bad kinda takes the fun outta it.

I learned the SMU equivalent of the Maytag repairman is the punt return team.

Not even close. We've got a long way to go, but it's better than last year.

I think it has forced 7 turnovers in the first two games. The offense has scored touchdowns on 4 of them.

I haven't checked the stats, but assuming you're right, 3.5 turnovers per game is a significant improvement. Last year, the defense averaged 2.0.

Thank you for your concern re:Mustang Band uniforms. Unfortunately, the Band does not have an unlimited budget with which it can buy new uniforms each time the school decides to change the shade of blue.

If you would like to remedy the situation, please consider making a donation to the Diamond M Club.

An FYI, do you know how much it costs to outfit a band? Do you know how long (and HOW MUCH) it took to finally get horns in playable condition to [easily] the most spirited group in the University? Go write a $250k check and we'll have new uniforms the next time you see us.

You can take your refocused anger elsewhere. We don't deserve it -- and it's certainly not our fault you thought JJ was gonna open the season 2-0. with a century of TDs.
