Which is the Bigger Surprise?SMU has the Worst Rated Defense in Division 1A or that June Jones' Offense is the No. 100th rated Offense?

Current rankings indicate that any improvement on either side of the ball will indicate progress!!!!!!!
I thought JJ ran the run n shoot
![]() This is the shoot n shoot n shoot n punt ![]() 1 dimensional offenses usually don't do very well. The real run n shoot takes advantage of what the defense is doing. Our running game is no threat at all. Not designing a way to use JW's running ability at QB, and redshirting BLM this year was a BIG oops, and complacency on JJ's part. Wasted a year of BLM's elgibility that he could've used learning on the sidelines. Then JJ would've had 4 years of BLM under more players that fit his system. ![]()
Look at the bright side - it obviously gave you an endless amount of material to [deleted] and complain about non-stop.
JJ is going to run his offense, he is not going to let players slide by doing what they want to do. When they execute, the complaits will stop. Implementing the RnS is not an easy task due to the timing and way JJ scripts plays. Way more difficult then installing a WCO or Air Coryell type O. The base offense being used currently is vanilla yet it is still able attack a defense reasonably well. Execution is the problem. OL blocking has improved considerably from last year.
Defense will be behind for a while. Schemes are in place talent and execution is an obstacle.
Over the past 6 seasons, on average, SMU’s defense has allowed 437 yards per game, easily one of the worst, if not THE WORST in all of college football.
After careful analysis, I have determined the root cause of our woeful inadequacies.... WE NEED TO FIRE OUR DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
The biggest surprise to me is that the defense, as bad as it is, looks better organized than last year. That just goes to show that organization isn’t everything. But the uniforms, white helmet and all, look really good. Much better than last year.
20 years of anti-competitive SMU policies will create bad teams. It does surprise me a litte the defense is the worst if not in the bottom 10 of all Div. 1-A teams but it is due to 1) being undersized compared to our competition, 2) playing two good teams so far--TCU and Tx Tech and 2) having an offense that is not on the field much with quick scores (or in SMU's case too many 3 and outs). It may get worse with Houston and Tulsa coming up on the schedule. Tulsa is the highest scoring team in Div. 1 and Houston is not far behind. It is hard being an SMU fan.
Not due solely to playing these good teams. Also contributing to our defensive woes was giving up 26 first downs, 233 yards rushing, 232 yards passing, and 36 points to D-1AA Texas State. I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Probably so, because once they get into their D-1AA schedule, they'll be facing better defenses than SMU. I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
