I agree that retention is a huge issue. I also think signing kids with limited talent and then watching them perform at a sub-par level makes our coaches more willing to churn the line-up, primarily with younger kids who I feel are not appreciably better than the ones they are replacing. Occasionally they do find a Justin Rodgers; more often than not it is perpetual failure.
JJ playing so many freshmen is testament to this. PB did the same thing.

Retention is a huge issue and it comes from so many different directions. Kids not getting along with the coach, getting homesick, not performing academically, getting mad about not getting playing time, disciplinary issues, not performing on the field, injuries, getting thrown into games too early in their college careers, you wonder how schools keep players anymore.

At least we haven't had to worry about any of them leaving early for the NFL draft. 
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
