Another thought: how about a hockey-style format. 3 periods instead of 4 quarters. How many games would we have won over the years if there was no 4th quarter?

Actually a good clock operator can over the course of a game bleed 30 seconds to a minute off the clock or add a like amount. There's the slow thumb and the fast thumb. Only in the last two minutes do people notice.
