Man, was I wrong about....

Postby westexSMU » Sat Oct 25, 2008 11:26 pm

our offense "getting it's share of points against Navy". Withg this team you never know when they are going to show up or at all. I really thought we were starting to get things put together the last few weeks, but that 1st half against Navy was as bad as the effort in the 1st half of our game with Tulane. Very Disappointing...Our D today was probably the worst I have ever seen here post DP.

27 yards Total Offense in the 2nd Half wasn't so great either. Our Punter could run for 27 yards.

That's the problem with a one dimensional gimmick offense...Run and Shoot doesn't work well in poor conditions, much like the triple option is not that great when you are down 20 points....

The Spread Offense with Willis last year was so much better at scoring points, course the one common factor between this year and last is our horrid defense, who saw the same play about 50 times and never really stopped it.

good point, we have had amazingly good and favorable weather at home this year. not so lucky every year. the wind blows and the rains fall in October and November in dallas too, this aint hawaii. remember that nevada game a few years back? La tech. bunch of bad weather games at ford. if the excuse is this offense can only function in pristine conditions, thats lame.

i'm bummed because i dont see that we have accomplished anything by benching willis this year. i dont see that we have found anything yet that we can point to and say, this is the future. Yenga is a stud, but another far undersized player at his position. We need 10 jucos plain and simple. anything less is a total lack of commitment to being competitive and to stop embarrassing this university over and over again.

just dreaming, but i suppose if we were ever lucky enough to put a season of good play and good weather together, and earned the right to rep CUSA at the Liberty Bowl we would probably have to forfeit the bowl game. our offense does not function in typical december weather in memphis.

That's the problem - we ALWAYS have an excuse - we're young, the weather's bad, we are learning the system, give us a year............I heard 'em for 15 years.

Navy played in the same weather, with a first year coach using an untested QB and they had no problems.

that wasn't just any untested QB...it was Ricky Dobbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

btw....his 42 rushing attempts must be an NCAA record for most attempts by a 3rd string QB...probably pretty close for ANY QB.

You guys are rediculous blaming that horrible offensive performance on the weather.

You act as if they were playing in Green Bay while faced with sub zero temp.

hate to say it, but this game was lost from the decision to take the ball and having to move into the wind/rain from the get go. Henderson's fumbling the ball into the end zone and then going back to pick it up and try to run it out was just par with what has been happening to this team all year.

A quick 3 and out and an anemic punt into gale force winds (that was nearly blocked) and we were quickly off to defeat.

Worst conditions I've ever sat thru. There's a reason Navy rarely put the ball in the air (toss sweeps, that is). You had to be there to appreciate how miserable things were.

It is really critical to have an effective running game for the run and shoot to be effective in those type of condition.

Weather was the story no question about it. Wind dictated a terrible start along with a very poor decsion by Henderson to run the opening kick off out of the back of the end zone. Tough to start the game inside the 10 straight into a 25 mph wind with blowing rain. Morestad made mistakes on first 3 punts of trying to make high long punts wherein the wind merely blew the ball up higher and right back at him. When you are immediately down 20 zip it is tough to get untracked. Point can be made that this is the RUN and Shoot offense and our glaring lack of any run offense doomed us early. All initial attempts to establish the run failed with Navy really packing the box and forcing the passing game into some rain and significant wind. Offense obviously failed to generate any action or make wind adjustments on those limited possessions when they had the wind.

Sorry we weren't able to find you, Pocono. Kind of turned into a mass scramble for shelter at the Mustang Club tailgate. Pretty good SMU turnout, considering those miserable conditions. Did get a chance to stop by Maryland 78's tailgate next door and meet his group. We WILL see better days & times.

He wasn't in the back of the end zone. He was only a yard or two deep.

The poor decision was to elect to take the ball after winning the coin toss. Navy got to take the wind, putting our offense at a disadvantage from the start. Great coaching.

Better get acustomed to that style of coaching. We ALWAYS want the ball. It's all about scoring one more time than the opponent. That's the mindset and doesn't appear Jones is deviating as he tries to instill that in this team. Aggressive all the way.
