NO DOUBT
The W legacy
No WMD Take out leader of a country who is an enemy of your biggest enemy in the region. Biggest enemy capitalizes on your mistake….oh, and it cost a cool Trillion $ (and counting) in the process. Presided over worse economic crisis since the Great Depression, namely because he continued and encouraged failed predecessor policy of ‘homeownership for all Americans, regardless of it they can afford it’. Home prices soar, but without fundamentals to support it. Citizens take out 2nds, 3rds and 4ths on their homes, accumulating more and more debt while going on a huge spending binge. This was a financial disaster waiting to happen. Came into office with his party having majorities in both Congress and Senate…leaves with opposing parties controlling super-majorities and most likely the White House….but it goes even further than that…new majority will be most liberal in decades, totally repudiating his policies of the last 8 years. So I ask the supporters of the W library at SMU…do you still feel as enthusiastically as you did 3 years ago?....Me, I was lukewarm about it then…same as today.
Can't argue with any of that. Although I think the change in leadership coming is more a natural swing of the pendulum than the result of any particular political issue. It's been a long time since one party held the Whitehouse for more than the two consecutive terms allowed by one guy, Dubya's daddy on the heels of Reagan was the last one, and he bowed out after one term. I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Its not really a repudiation of conservatism, its a repudiation of pseudo-conservatism. The Republican congress that spent money like drunken sailors (although that gives drunken sailors a bad name) with the Administration signing off on everything. Free trade without reciprocity. Inability to deal with the economy because they'd already mortgaged everything and were printing money due to the spending. As a result, the only alternative is the far left. After Obama names his first Supreme Court nominee and America is attacked to "test" Obama, and our health insurance gets nationalized, and employers start laying off people because they can't afford the insurance, and taxes go up which leads to more layoffs, then you'll see things swing the other way. I'll still take the W Library and think tank. LBJ was probably as unpopular as Bush and he still gets lots of visitors to his monstrosity of a Library.
I actually agree with the last 3 posts. And in answer to the question from SoCal, yes, I still strongly favor the library. It will be a very good asset to Dallas, and SMU.
All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
I'm not ready yet. But I am seeking fundraising opportunities just in case the Special D guys want to put out a jtstang '12 tip jar at Homecoming. mrydel you know you're on my vp short list but I may actually need you in a useful position. I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
