Is this the only running back we are seriously in the running for? Craig Swann commented on the broadcast this past weekend that we needed a major upgrade in the RB position. Don't know if that is the consensus or not. Just wondering if we have any current RB commits or are working towards beefing up that position.

I think Swann made the comment following a sweep play that went for a loss. He observed that the RB did not have sufficient speed to really get around the corner and got strung out by the D.

Sofele really looks to be in the mold of a TT type of running back. Smaller in stature, but good hands and very dangerous in space. Spread the defense out and then take advantage of the mismatches brought by LB's covering a guy with this kind of ability. His highlight film is pretty impressive with an exceptional burst and ability to knife through the defense. Could end up being a pretty salty punt returner as well. Reminds me a bit of a Darren Sproles type, if you care to dream big.

what we need is a kid like Boise St has-Ian Johnson-tough kid who can run and catch and has a quick first step not necessarily 4.4 speed. Probably going to be tough to convince a top recruit to come to SMU and carry the ball 6-8 times a game. Hopefully, he is from the same mold. Remember we are still involved in the Imade kid from Rowlett who is having a great year and fits that description.

I think you can convince a good running back that there is a valuable place and a good number of carries available in the R & S. I did not look up the stats for the Navy game; however, we had 22 runs in the Houston game. I'm sure that with a good quick back and some success on the ground that the play calling would even accomodate more of the running game. It is clear, at least to me, that it is difficult to currently call running plays because we do not have the requisite quickness and speed at running back and the current O line simply cannot create holes. "Catch 22" situation this season with the play calling.

Every Coach in the Country would tell a prospective RB recruit that he would be "Sideshow Bob" at SMU. That's just a fact. Is there an oportunity at SMU-yes but most kids with a lot of options will chose the other options. I'm not saying anything that an SMU RB recruit wouldn't hear from our opponents.

I fully concur that every competing coach recruiting a running back could make a fairly compelling, but superficial, case that SMU would not be the best option for a running back. On the other hand, I think JJ and staff could quickly dispel those arguments with current stats and demonstrating/projecting the R & S as properly run Hawaii style when the talent was available to fully run the offense.
