Johnson vs Jones - instant gratification?

With Ga Tech's win today over FSU, GT is now in position to possibly win the ACC in Paul Johnson's 1st year

I know there were a lot of naysayers who felt our program would be doomed if Johnson was hired...and of course he aimed much higher than SMU with the GA Tech gig...but the question is that if Johnson was here, would SMU possibly be competing for the CUSA title?

JW would have been a perfect option QB and DeMyron Martin (or Andrew McKinney) would have made a good FB with Butler the tailback. Saners and Robinson would have still given us the home run threats you wwant in that offense and with a ball control offense, our defense might have been more effective.

I'm not saying I'm displeased with the Jones hire. I think he will eventually be successful here. I just think Johnson would have had instant success with the players we already have.

I like Johnson and am pleased he is doing well. He would have done well here without a doubt, but JJ is still the man for the job.

Johnson could have done more with the current talent on offense...this is NOT a knock on JJ, but the talent here fits PJ's system more than it fits JJ's. There would still be an issue on defense unless he brought in a bevy of great recruits.

That being said, JJ is the man here. Give him time to get players who fit his system in.

Apparently the wishbone is dead at Georgia Tech-they ran today with the RBs moved up in the Slot. BTW did anybody notice that when FSU fumbled into the endzone at the end of the game it was recovered by an SMU Legacy-Jim Bob Taylor's son.

It starts with the name: triple option. Some have called it the "flexbone." Quarterback Lamar Owens said the team calls it "the spread." Just don't call it the wishbone. Reporters and other coaches often have made that mistake.
"And that drives Coach crazy," Navy athletics spokesman Scott Strasemeier said. "It's nowhere close to what the wishbone is."

That's because the wishbone has three backs in the backfield; the triple option has one, with a slotback (or "A-back") lined up next to and behind the tackle on each side of the five-man offensive line.

Yeah we would have been awesome with a run-oriented offense this year. What a plethora of RB talent we have... we would have been unstoppable.

Georgia Tech has never beaten since FSU since they joined the ACC. That's not holding all things equal of course but GT was also playing #15 FSU, not a weak CUSA team.

Stallion, PJ doesn't run the wishbone but he sometimes lines up in it and runs wishbone-esque plays...he also lines up in the spread. Multiple schemes but loves to run.

That being said, I'd still prefer Jones and the the long term play but I do think we would have won 4-5 games this year since our offense would have been halfway decent day one...

let's remember GT was 7-6 last year. with 3 of their losses to ranked teams. so it's not exactly the challenge that is rebuilding our disaster of a program

Navy didn't run the wishbone under Paul Johnson. Or if it was "the wishbone", it was out of a spread formation where the fullback is right behind the QB with the other backs in the slot or right behind the tight ends. The closest comparison isn't the wishbone; it is the double-wing.

i think pj looked at gtech's defense and the decision made itself. their defensive line is top ten in the country, especially that 6'7'' defensive end
