Give me a break. This is not June Jones' first rodeo. He's a little surprised we haven't pulled a few of these games out that we should have, but all in all we are EXACTLY where he expected we'd be. We as fans have the history. He's history proof and has a proven ability to turn it around at every stop. Every stop. We are not some shining exception.

We may not be, but it's sure felt that way since 1989.

I sure hope not. That jury's still out.

I just realized that we've pi$$ed all over a thread entitled "Good News." Maybe our mindsets aren't where they should be either.
Seems like just yesterday I was walking onto the plane to Houston for the Rice game, and was pleasantly surprised with a 13-0 lead.

I doubt he would simply leave before his contract was up because the team was not winning. He would be viewed as a quitter. Remember, he is making more than a lot of other college coaches including bsc schools. If he left early it would be because of some broken promises about a commitment to winning (like not allowing certain players in school). As long as SMU is willing to pay 2 mil a year for a coach, then it will be an attractive job to a lot of qualified coaches.

I agree that it's got to be a helluva lot easier to retire in Maui with $10M than with some lesser multiple of $2M.

And a darn good lead it was. Imagine any Pony fans that died right then. They actually died happy.

Look back at the thread at the beginning of the season when everyone predicted the season record. This is the first friggin year. I was hoping for better but certainly wasn't going to be devastated if we didn't win many. And Reedfrawg. did you see the guy on killerfrogs that stole my avatar????? I couldn't believe it.
It is shocking that Stallion is the voice of reason. And I did not notice the avater - I normally don't unless it is a scantily clad woman in motion!

On the Rivals site I noticed something about JJ audio and it looked like he mentioned what his expectations for wins this season were before the season...anyone happen to hear that?

PoconoPony wrote:I disagree with the proposition that this was a cash grab. From what I have read and can find out from Hawaii sources JJ was simply totally frustrated at his inability to get any support to make critical changes needed for the football program. They started to take him for granted because they knew he loved Hawaii and had told many people it was his dream job and place to be. He even offered to take huge pay cuts to better compensate assistant coaches and the AD and President ignored his attempts to stabilize his coaching staff to no avail. Facilities were in terrible condition, his budget and specifically recruiting budget was a $50,000 joke.....etc. Bottom line is that he left after at least 5 years of futile and frustrating attempts to make the program better and more attractive for all involved. He was not appreciated, his efforts ignored until they learned he was leaving and it was time to leave a bad situation.
I agree with all of that. Hawaii was a joke and treated him very poorly. I'm just saying that the fact SMU offered $2MM is his primary motivation for being here (certainly understandable) and maybe if offered $1MM he might have just taken the year off. Hopefully his heart is in it, but if the players aren't in the weight room on their own then coaches can and do "motivate" or "encourage" them to be there. I blame that on the coaches more than the players.

Well, to get us headed back in the original direction, here is a JJ quote:
Quotable Jones
On the future: “I feel very optimistic. [color=blue]This school has a lot to offer – a lot to offer. And when we turn this thing, this is going to be the place to be.â€
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

All the players start with 15 hours. That gives them a little cushion to be able to drop a class and still carry 12 hours to keep eligible. Most have their first class a 11, that's after practice and team breakfast which is not as leisurely of a morning as it sounds when you consider what time they start and how long practice is. So spread those hours over the week and the guys are probably getting out around 2-3. I think they go to team meetings at 3, eat dinner at the Hump, followed by study hall for all redshirts, true freshmen, and anyone who does not have a 2.5. Remember it's a strike to miss a meeting, study hall hours, or a class. Plus they have to make up work from classes from traveling. So where do you find that "hour" that you're supposed to grab during the day to hit the weightroom? Maybe some of the guys are down to 12 hours at this point but my bet is finding that "extra" time is not so easy.

I believe JJ is telling them to commit to D-1A football and find that time - it's there if you're not wasting it on other non-productive (i.e. typical college years) activities.

Unfortunately for him it will be even harder for him to retire with all that money after the government gets done "spreading the wealth"
But the good news is I can quit my job now!
