Vincent Chase Commits

Postby Stallion » Mon Jun 02, 2003 10:42 pm

for those that didn't notice the post at the bottom of the Vincent Chase thread-Rivals is reporting that Chase committed to SMU today. He has been called perhaps the best TE in Texas-check out the OFFERS-Florida, OU, LSU, Nebraska, Syracuse, K-State, Wisconsin among others. That could be the best collection of offers for a SMU recruit in at least 16 years.

Stallion, being one of the top TEs in Texas I assume he will be a national top 100 recruit. Would he be our first since Marcus Mosley?

Sterling Harris was close but in Florida, OU, and LSU you have 3 of the top 5 recruiting programs in the Country-not to mention the other big time schools. Those are the type of offers one customarily see from National 100 players-the listed schools only offer that type of player this early. I would think he would be at least a 4 star on the Rivals rating system.

BTW Bobby Chase had a very productive year last year with 49 catches for 811 yards-not sure if that includes the playoffs.

It's confirmed in today's DMN. This is really great news for SMU. Stallion: I know you were one who questioned Copeland's hiring of Coach Bennett. I assume any doubts you had have been erased. Bennett and his staff appears to be on their way of doing for SMU what Fran and his staff did for TCU. Now, if we could just find out who we are going to be playing with in 2005!

Bennett is 3-9 with just about the same team as Cavan had. Time will Tell. Cavan's first two recruiting classes in my opinion were at least as miraculous as Bennett's so far under the circumstances. Remember Cavan didn't have commitments before December because of SMU's idiotic recruiting rules. What would Bennett's classes look like without early commitments from Chase, Massey, Meeks, and the other 12 or so recruits Bennett got before Cavan was allowed to sign his first. Almost all of SMU's big-time commitments would have been in question. I'm not sure if some of you realize how BIG the recruiting gap has grown between SMU and the rest of the Texas schools but SMU is just now making the race somewhat competitive. Before we declare victory we have a lot more improving to do. BTW I still feel that Charlie Waters would have opened the doors to more influential people in Dallas than perhaps the last 5 SMU coaches combined and I have little doubt he would have been one of the Top Recruiters in Texas too.

Oh, come on, let it go - can't you just support the coach we have?

And you're right - we DO have a lot of improving to do. However, I don't remember reading anything about any of Coach Cavan's classes like I read about Coach Bennett's 2003 signees. I know he got some players with good reputations: Marcus Mosley, Sterling Harris, Chris Cunningham, etc. But he never had a CLASS like Coach Bennett put together. And Vincent Chase is going to be the start of another terrific class.

Cavan's second class, under much more difficult circumstances, was VERY close to Bennett's last class. It was ranked by some as high as third best in the state although I feel it was more like about 5th best. Bennett's class last year was ranked from 4th to 8th best in the state. I hate to tell you but considering the shortcuts made by fellow WAC schools the recruiting class signed last year repeated 4 more years MIGHT give us a shot at a bowl. Schools like Boise St., Fresno St, Hawaii, Louisiana Tech and now watch San Jose rarely show up on the top of recruiting lists but I've showed repeatedly over the last few years how they eventually kick our [deleted].

There is no comparison between Mike Cavan and Phil Bennett. None. No college coach is more connected to Texas HS football than Phil. No college coach has a stronger work ethic than Phil. We absolutely got the right man. To bring up the name of another individual and all the "what-ifs" is counterproductive. Charlie Waters is a great guy, but a weak, non-candidate following Cavan's departure.

Congratulations, coaches. This guy sounds like a fantastic player.
Hope this gets the ball rolling for the class!

Should we assume that's Vincent Chase's picture up there at the top of your recruiting page? Nice job! And it looks like the picture is in front of Ford Stadium!
