What is this about 22 commitments?

Postby George S. Patton » Thu Nov 20, 2008 9:48 am

On Rivals, there are 18 commitments listed. I have heard from a couple of friends who CLAIM that they were told we are up to 22. Does anyone know if this is a legitimate number or bogus?

Thanks in advance.

When you talk to the coaching staff they always include the grey shirts...they also claim the number is higher than reported...

Yeah 4 Greyshirts. Which includes 2 OL. So this means we have 9 OL in this class!!! We dont need this many in my opinion and I wish we were taking more like 6. Since our OL was one of the better parts of our team.(Even though we have up a lot of sacks) How about D Line????? At least the other two greyshirts are LB's.

you do understand that the majority of football teams recruit OLM for 3 years down the line-after their redshirt freshman, freshman and maybe even Sophmore season. It certainly has little to with how they perform in 2008. And quite frankly I'll challenge you on that point that SMU OLM is anything but VERY POOR in 2008. Last time I looked they were last in the nation in Sacks and last in rushing yardage. They may be better than we feared but they ain't that good either. (Actually they have moved up the ladder in Sacks allowed per game to the mid-80s-but I think a great place to start rebuilding a passing offense is in the offensive line because it will generrally take them an extra year to mature.-that is why it is a priority with Jones now).

There is also the question of who is going to wind up on the Oline and Who gets moved to the Dline, like Jimmy Chase coming over to DT.

You should note that most of our O line recruits also play D line. They have been recruited for the O line; however, are good and big enough athletes that a transition to the D line is a possibility and should not be over looked.

Very rare for OL to move to DL - almost always goes the other way.

Jones has a reputation for recruiting on the O side of the ball and sending folks to the D side. So far its happened at least once, it won't surprise me if it happens again.

Chase was a defensive lineman that he tried to move to OLM-so I really don't think so

Weird, I had him at OT in High School. I guess I shouldn't believe everything I read on the internet.

Regardless of the title of the thread, I saw where there were 18 names listed. Now we're at 19. I looked at the list and every name looked familiar unless I'm missing something.

A little help, please. Thanks

Scoops was right - Jimmy Chase is playing DL now.
Wearing No. 72 and looking bigger/stronger, too.
Maybe one of the incoming OL recruits will join him?

Michael Lafaele was a great center in high school in Hawaii...and he became an awesome DT/NT or Hawaii in college, after beginning as a center. I think he was only moved to the DL after Hawaii's DL had some injuries. Lafaele was a key for the 2006/2007 seasons Hawaii had, and the rushing D was MUCH better in those seasons than 2004/2005.
