That would be great but isn't realistic. Next year looks like a three-win type of season. Maybe get to .500 by 2010 (best case). I know everybody gets excited when SMU gets a commit but a lot of the guys on the SMU roster don't belong playing I-A football. Even if Jones upgrades the level of player coming into the program, it still takes a couple of years in football. SMU is still a long, long way away from having a consistently successful football program.
I agree 100% with all your points-however I'm not sure you have to have a consistently strong, quality football team to go bowling in CUSA-better do what I do and add that caveat in. CUSA is really hate to say it but its pathetic. SMU might jump up and surprise CUSA in say 2010 but they won't qualify as a quality football team that can compete with the better football teams on our schedule for several more years even if everything goes well.
Yes, but SMU needs that kind of luck--surprising a weak CUSA to get to the a bowl game, any bowl game--in order to get the recruiting cycle kick-started. The problem now is that, even with a level playing field, we are so far removed from being good that good players just don't want to come to a team they perceive as a loser.
We need to take what we can get for the next couple of years and figure out a way to win some freaking games with them. Let's keep our fingers crossed. I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Can't believe I am saying this, but I agree with Stallion. The CUSA pool of teams is not so amazing that we couldn't get 6 wins next year, which is all it took S Miss to get to a bowl game.
Yes, Jumpshooter, it will take several years before we could fathom being consistently good, but it's not out of the question for us to get to a bowl game within 2 years given the conference we play in. The only team that has been consistently good in CUSA over the last 5 years has been Tulsa.
