For those who do not know Richard Quick, he was a 3 year multi event All-America swimmer who captained SMU in 1964/65 under legendary Hall of Fame coaches A.R."Red" Barr and George McMillion. Rich later coached at Iowa State and SMU before leading the Texas and Stanford women's swim teams to 14 NCAA championships. He is a 3 time Olympic women's head coach and 3 time assistant Olympic coach, head coach for numerous International championships including 4 World Championship teams, member of the Swim Coaches Hall of Fame and SMU Distinguished Alumni. Rich coached more than 60 Olympic gold medalists, more than 130 Olympic medalists and multitudes of NCAA All-America swimmers. Rich was lured out of retirement last year and is currently head coach at Auburn.

Rich has recently been diagnosed with glioblastoma multi form stage IV which is an agressive form of brain tumor.

Just spoke with Coach Mac, who reports that Richard is on his way to Duke U. Medical Center for treatment. Sounds quite serious and presumably unoperatable at the moment.

I was a freshman swimmer, when Richard was Captain of the varsity team in 1965. His resume is one the longest and most prolific in swimming with many NCAA champsionships at both Texas and Stanford, as well as U.S. Olympic Swim coach three times.

Several years ago, he recieved one of the SMU Alumnus of the Year Awards. Gentleman, world class coach and developer of talent and people. This news was in the Chicago Tribune and hit me hard.

When I was a freshman at SMU, I flunked the swimming test and got sent to novice swimming. Richard was our instructor. He taught us how to swim and I'll never forget how patient he was with guys and gals who absolutely could not swim. As he moved up the coaching ladder, I have great pride in knowing that he taught me how to swim. And when I had a boat capsize in Currituck Sound off of Cape Hatteras, what he taught me came in handy. Get well Coach Quick.

I thought I knew him. I went to high school with his son and the entire family were great people.

Rich received initial opinions from neurologists in Auburn and Houston that his tumor is inoperable and many new techniques are not available. Traditional chemotheropy and radiation treatments are believed to be his only course of action. Biopsy results and pathology reports are still pending at Duke University Hospital. Rich and wife are currently in NYC where they learned that they are not able to work with Sloan Kettering re Novocure treatments. They are currently exploring leads regarding gene therapy in CA and vaccine therapy in Dallas. At this time they are seeking any leads for doctors involved in new or cutting edge treatments. Say a prayer as his prognosis is not good.

I have an Aunt that didn't get diagnosed until she went Stage IV metastatic. It's an incredibly trying time for everyone in the family. Best wishes.
