TO THE RACK with Donatas Rackauskas: One down, two to go

Postby PonyPride » Thu Jan 08, 2009 2:00 am

Donatas Rackauskas is back from his vacation and breaks down the college basketball season into three parts — non-conference games, conference games and the postseason — and how he sees the Mustangs as they head into the conference opener Saturday against UTEP.

Enjoy!

It's a good read. He's probably been one of the better columnists to contribute.

But I'm still going to differ with him on the UAPB and UTSA games. Those are guarantee $$ games that were at Moody. You simply do not lose to those teams. It's unacceptable.

There is no such a thing as guaranteed win in college basketball... look at BC... Beats North Carolina one game and then get their *** kicked by Harvard...

And Im sure the BC people are saying the same thing I'm saying. It could come back to haunt them if their ACC season fizzles and they are on the bubble trying to get into the tournament.

The selection committee will consider that a bad loss.

You're right, they probably are... But that's what I mean - no game is guaranteed... Instead, I would call them games that a team should win...

Fair enough. But as you know the term guarantee is because those teams are given a big check for the right to come and usually get their arse kicked.

Obviously, we didn't put that philosophy into practice against a then-winless UAPB which then proceeded to get blown out by 30 at Nevada, Cincinnati and San Diego State before winning a conference game recently.

Now will never make the tourney this year!

While those losses sucked, hopefully the team and coach learned something
to make themselves better for conf play and the future. Let it go, stop calling off the seasons and look ahead to conf play where we all said this is where the team should be gellin.

Outstanding stuff. Keep 'em coming, Rack.

These columns by former athletes are just one more reason this site is what it is: greatness.
