UNT quarterback Giovanni Vizza to transfer

DENTON – North Texas sophomore quarterback Giovanni Vizza has decided to transfer after two record-setting seasons at the school.

Vizza threw for 5,146 yards and 32 touchdowns in just 22 games with the Mean Green.

"It's just my time to leave the program," Vizza said in a prepared statement. "I appreciated all the support that so many people gave me. The program is just not what I expected and is just not the right fit for me now. I pray and hope it becomes the program the faithful Mean Green fans want it to be and the players want it to be in the future."

Vizza's departure leaves UNT with two returning quarterbacks who attempted a pass in 2008. Nathan Tune, a Celina product who will be a junior next season, went 6-for-13 for 55 yards in limited action. Southlake Carrroll product Riley Dodge, son of Todd Dodge, threw just two passes during his freshman season.

"When you spend the amount of time with someone like we did with Giovanni, it’s disheartening," coach Todd Dodge said. "We will be fine, but it’s confusing, to say the least. "We wish him well."

Derek Thompson, a senior at Glen Rose, has orally committed to UNT and is expected to begin his career with the Mean Green in the fall.

Vizza could transfer and play immediately for a Championship Subdivision team or sit out a season at a Bowl Subdivision school as a redshirt and then have two years of eligibility remaining.

Vizza became UNT's starter in the fifth game of his freshman season and set school records for passing yards in a season by a freshman with 2,388 and set an NCAA freshman record with eight touchdown passes in a loss to Navy.

He ranks fifth in UNT history in career passing yards.

I just read this on line in the DMN, does anyone know what happen. Yes, Yes, I know it is NTSU but it is still interesting when the starting QB decides to transfer after his sophmore year.

I think he's just tired of being blackballed by SMU and stuck in a nowhere conference at NTSU.

Maybe the head coach told him he was being benched despite shattering records as a QB his freshmen and sophomore seasons. Nah...that would never happen!

Vizza was the Alamo Heights QB down here before there current QB Drew Allen who is going to OU. You may not know but Vizza was offered by Nevada and some other smaller schools after they won the 4A title. He switched to North Texas in part because of Dodge.

Dodge was not the coach Vizza thought he was, and comment made at lunch last week was that Dodge was found to be "more flash, like a car salesman." Also, there was implicit encouragement to get stronger / bigger by any means necessary.
