Margus went to the Beijing Olympics and competed for Estonia. He comes to the bookstore all the time and is a really great guy.

Just because he's a nice guy doesn't mean he can't be a bad [deleted]. Anyone who competes in the Olympics has to have a huge competitive streak, and as big as this guy is, he's definitely going to be intimidating on the field.

[quote="mrydel"] question re Randy Matson

My recollection was that Randy Matson was an outstanding HS football as well as basketball player. He started for TAMU for three years ( frosh ineligible in his day) in basketball as a 6'6" 275 lb. forward. I recall that he was very agile, a real presence in the paint, got his share of rebounds and frequently scored in double figures. TAMU had a very talented 6'11"center named John Beasley who combined with Matson to make them a very tough team to beat. Beasley later played for the ABA Dallas Chaparrals ( today's San Antonio Spurs) at their home in those days which was Moody. Matson drew some NBA interest in basketball. Our own Charles Beasley ('67) and Denny Holman('67) also joined John Beasley on the Chaps for several years.

In 1965 (?) Matson broke the world record in the shot and 2 weeks later was scheduled to compete in the SWC track championships hosted by SMU at Owenby. At the time I was taking a PE class taught by the track coach. Obviously, Owenby was not a great venue for track field events and particularly shot. Panic set in when Matson broke the world record because the shot ring at Owenby was not close to level, no longer than 50 feet and located in an obscure corner of the Mockingbird end of the stadium . The track coach promised everyone in the class an A grade if they would help haul dirt and lay sod to re- build some new field event areas. I was tasked to build the shot put ring which was relocated to a central area on the football field to facilitate a featured central view from the stands. We hauled nearly 100 wheelbarrow loads of dirt and built a nice shot put field out to 80 feet and had it perfectly surveyed level so that he could go for another world record. My reward for doing the preponderance of the work on the ring/field was to be the assistant official for the shot put event. I recall that Matson may have also broken the world record the week before the SWC meet so he came in as the source of considerable media attention. On the day of the meet the media was in mass at the shot put venue. Unfortunately, Matson only threw 68' plus and did not get close to the world record although that mark shattered the SWC record. During the warm up he told me that he was a bit tired and the media attention for the past several weeks had been a real distraction. After he failed to break the world record he told me and the head judge that he was relieved the event was over and just wanted to get away from the media, go home and rest up for the NCAAs.

Difficulty in those days for athletes was that Avery Brundage headed up the International Olympic Committe and all Olympic athletes had to be strictly and purely amature. Hence, there was no way most athletes in sports like swimming, track....etc. could stay amature and continue their careers past college. Matson was faced with that dilemma and chose football as the only way to use his athletic skills and earn a living. Matson was one of those exceptionally talented athletes who had every tool and could excel at the highest level in what ever sport he chose.
