I agree it is a modest improvement over the past few years, but that is not saying much. I was hoping for more.
Look at our history. We always seem to get a lift in recruiting from the buzz created by our new coaches. If you compare PB’s 1st real class versus Coach Doh’s versus JJ’s; I would argue this one is at the bottom. At the bottom even though JJ is the most respected of the 3 coaches and is recruiting with the least amount of restrictions.
So what we are left with is another young team, an injury or two away from a 1 or 2 win season, trying to earn respectability so that JJ can recruit better athletes. That model has failed us so far.
Count me as someone who is disappointed in this class.

Too early to judge. How many guys from Bennett's first class actually panned out? Jones is a proven talent evaluator, let's see how much talent we really are getting.

Total Points: 78th Average Points: 83rd CUSA Total Points: 8th (should be 7th except for some magical, mystical bonus points somehow awarded Rice) CUSA Average Points: 8th
We are not going to be finishing in the high 60s or probably even the low 70s as represented
PB's 1st Recruiting Class
Total Points: 62th
Combined WAC / CUSA Average Points: 1st
WAC Total Points: 1st
Combined WAC / CUSA Total Points : 2nd...UCF was first due to 3 more recruits.

Agreed, couch'em, it is too early to tell...still, I was expecting somewhat more from our $2M man. If I had to grade this class I would give it a C+

But isn't next year going to be a better year to judge Jone's recruiting since then he will have had a full year to recruit and offer the players that are currently juniors in high school this year?

Yeah we were also 2-22 in a non-BCS conference over the last two years, not that that would have any negative effects on recruiting.

Actually we were 0-22 in that non-BCS conference.
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

And PB or Coach Doh had it any better when they arrived?????
You must be kidding...of the 3, JJ by far inherited the best program.

Yawn...yeah I must be kidding to think that the fact that we've gone 2-22, 0-16 in conference, and have a double digit losing streak against D-1A teams, all while playing in a mediocre to sub par non-BCS conference might, just might, have a negative affect on a coaching staff's ability to recruit.
What you are right about is that Doherty walked into a much, much, much worse mess than anyone else did around here.

can't get much worse than what Jones walked into-except this time the university looks to be solidly behind the football program. SMU 's talent hit rock-bottom especially on defense. It wasn't just X's and O's it was Jimmies and Joes

No more than what PB faced..I also think JJ's 1st year team would have defeated PB's 1st year team, especially if JWill was QB; ie I think JJ had more talent to work with than PB.
Either way, my bigger point here is that I was expecting more.

Stallion, I agree with your assessment, but I have one caveat. SMU and for that matter most private schools will have a hard time getting five deep at each position with Division 1 talent given the 85 scholarship limits. That would mean 25 - Division 1 talented walk-ons who would have to pay their own way. That's a huge number. Walk-ons are generally of the Rudy variety. Very few ever see the field for a game. Four deep is even hard because true freshman don't play much either. Five is impossible.

Hell, I'd like us to even be 1 deep with legit starters at each position- it would be a first!

Walk-ons aren't likely to do Jack. I guarantee you there are about 65-70 players on TCU Football team who were relatively highly recruited. Of course, you are never gonna get superstars at every position but you damn sure better have at least 2 strings ready to contribute to your football team and have other guys red-shirting or developing in the wings or you are going to be in trouble. TCU's Second string LB would have been the best player on the defensive side of the field for SMU this past year.
