Top Texas 5A QB Considering SMU

Postby Stallion » Tue Mar 23, 2004 7:50 pm

QB Chase Daniels 6-1, 205 4.5 of Southlake Carroll appears to be taking a close look at SMU although it appears he will have many suitors before its done. Daniels won the 5A Championship as a Sophmore and was denied a second championship ithis year n the closing minutes in a 16-15 loss to Katy. Daniels won the 5A Offensive MVP Award-unusual for a Junior. He is also the No. 36 rated player in Texas according to the Insiders. He threw for 3,681 yards with 42 TDs and a 67% passing percentage plus an additional 1,529 yards rushing with 17 more TDs. That's 59 TDs which is about the same number of TDs since SMU came back from the Death Penalty. He was also named a Junior All-American by Student Sports. Recently received his first offer from Missouri. Attended the first spring scrimmage at SMU and will camp at SMU. Definitely wants to play QB in college although several schools maybe looking at him at different positions.

Interesting prospect. I saw him in a couple of games at Texas Stadium and he seems to have the ability to pull things together when he was running the offense and there were times during his games where he almost seemed to will the team. Hopefully, he'll improve his decision making next year though because I seem to recall in the Irving game, he made some real bad decisions and had 4 picks. His pick at the end of the Katy game wasn't a good decision either but I'm sure he'll learn from that. He does have scrambling ability as they would usually design QB draws for him or if something broke down, he would usually run. With that, I will say that I think his numbers are a product of the offense they run at Carroll. From what I recall, it was pretty much a spread offense but with a lot of "dink and dunk" passes where the WR would get most of the yardage after the catch. I know this may be wrong but when I think of this kid, I think of Chris Sanders with a lot more mobility. He does play with a lot of heart though and I think he could be a pretty solid player at the D-I level, but just not at QB. He could be a WR or possibly DB. Of course, I am just a lowly peon football fan and not a scout.

I've heard this guy described as the beneficiary of playing in a very QB-friendly system. But if that size and speed are right, that just makes you a good athlete, not a good QB. His productivity speaks for itself. Those touchdown numbers really jump out at me, but what speaks the loudest (to me, at least) is the fact that he has an offer from Mizzou. They've had the great Brad Smith running the show up there for a couple of years, and they have recruited some extremely talented QBs since then. I've never seen this guy play, and I won't pretend I have. But if Mizzou likes him enough to offer him now, I'd be willing to bet he can really play.

Let's get serious: PB would have converted him to small inside middle scout LB, then SLOT IR, then back to Safety, then said "I shoudl have kept him at QB the whole time..."

Tight end.
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
