Interesting Recruiting Turns...

Postby JasonB » Sun Jan 18, 2004 7:36 pm

Looks like Rollman and Williams went elsewhere, but we got Lobo, which is not bad at all (DMN top 100) for a third choice ;) .

Iteresting though that according to threads on the football board we have more scholarships opened up, but in the last couple of days we lost those two linemen and the saftey Penelton.

Three more ships remaining assuming the reports are correct - I think we are looking at Saftey, and then just the best two players we can pull in.

I got a good trend-TCU continues to strike out with just about every top high school prospect as we turn down the stretch. They do have some quality JCs but their HS crop looks extremely average and its beginning to look like it will remain so.

That seems really strange to me - you would think on the heels of a few nice seasons they would have a nice shot at all but the very obvious top recruits. Any theories on this? Seems like Tech stepped it up, as did Kansas and Tulsa, and us to a somewhat lesser extent - did all of that combine to squeeze them out or what?

Perhaps some of those Cincy OL recruits who had their offers yanked might like to follow Burns here. When we play Marshall, we'll be facing kids out of the coal mines, might as well have a few of our own.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

You can spin it that way if you want, but we got one commit in front of a national audience, a couple of first team all-state players who were not even on the recruiting lists but are highly tauted by the HS coaches, a S.Tex Def MVP who the subscription lists completely missed, on and on. 14 HS commits (one 3 star & the rest 2 star, sound familiar?), 5 JCs and the HS kids are very good as are the JCs.

you know I'm pretty damn accurate and the glum posts by disappointed, knowledgeable Froggies on the Frog Forum is proof as one by one their most prized HS recruits targets have gone elsewhere. I've always given TCU credit when they deserve it-but this has to be a very disappointing HS class-no matter how you spin it. SMU HS class rates above TCU's HS class-slightly.

Doesn't look like the commitment on TV helped with any of the other recruits, eh? Maybe no one was watching... Also, why is everyone missing these players? Maybe TCU coaches just know more than everyone else.

a better question would be why hasn't SMU won the Super Bowl based upon what Gregg, Rossley, Cavan, Bennett and GoRedGoBlue have said about our recruiting classes in past years. Its all spin-especially by the coaches AFTER signing date and the insiders who listen to the Coaches. About all you can really do is pay attention to the players who get the quality offers and visits during the recruiting period since one would assume the Coaches are the experts. But AFTER signing date I have never heard a coach say "Boy did we get outrecruited this Year-we missed on dang near every targeted player we wanted and had to bottom fish just to land 25 bodies". The Coaches always tout the Great Recruiting Haul which is understandable but usually a facade.

Ono thing that is definitely becoming more apparent is that the BCS schools have a very distinct advantage in recruiting and it will become more & more difficult for schools such as SMU and TCU to recruit with them. Part of it is exposure, but most of it is money. Mizzou can fly their private jets into Addison, Love or where ever and pick up a recruit, wine & dine him and then bring him back. That is a middling BCS school and they have much more advantages than the top non-BCS schools.

Along with Mizzou, Tech has really made a major push in recruiting this year as has Okie State. Not bad programs, but not the elite and they are killing us as are the traditional powerhouse recruiting schools. If you can't find the overlooked talent you are not going to compete. You may win one or two of the big battles, but that won't build a team.

not to mention Arizona, Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas who have come into Texas strong this year. What you say about the BCS schools is true-but then again you don't have to play a Big 12 South schedule either. If SMU or TCU could repeatedly have a Top 50-Top 60 recruiting class then they would have a good chance of going 8-3 or 9-2 every year because no non-BCS schools generally recruit that well. Of course, other schools are able to take more short-cuts than others such as JCs, non-qualifiers, partial qualifiers or late qualifiers which really screw up the analysis of recruiting classes. What really makes me puke are guys yapping on about how recruiting doesn't matter because his school did this or that. More than likely if his team did this or that without "recruiting well" then they are likely taking the shortcuts.

SLANDER ALERT!!!

See here is prima facia evidence of Stallion 'assigning' something said to ME when it was never said at all.

I have never said that Rossley had great recruits, nor for that matter Bennett, and certainly not Cavan, but somehow that is attributed to me.

The only thing you will ever be able to research from my posts is that according to RIVALS, SMU has outrecruited TCU the past 2 years, and earlier in THIS year, we were ranked above them. Now that JUCOs are included, TCU is obviously ahead of us, but because of that, they will have to recruit JUCOS to replace these JUCOS in 2 years.

Now, is any of that FALSE or misleading?

Stallion, why don't you just go talk to the coaches and the athletic administration? Oh wait, you cannot, you are banned booster.

That's right, YOU are responsible for all this mess.

Go Red....

You are so, so wrong about Stallion! He is NOT a banned booster. I know Stallion (by his real nmae) and I also was around SMU football during the death penalty days. Because of this, I know each of the banned boosters. (some of which have been re-instated) Quit attacking and making accusations when you know nothing about what you are talking.

Maybe some of you will know the definitive answer to this...the comment about Missouri flying into Love or Addison field reminded me of this. The story I've heard is that state schools fly their jets all over the place to pick up recruits and take them back, etc. Yet, their athletic departments do not have to repay the true cost of flying that jet. They are only required to re-pay what a ticket in coach would cost for a similar commercial trip. So, in other words, they reimburse the school for just a portion of the true costs of all their recruiting junkets. Who makes up for the remainder of the cost, the taxpayers?

Can someone confirm if this is actually the case or not?

...and TCU strikes out again with the commitment of Top DE William Bell to OSU. That's about 12 out of the last 13 top TCU recruits who apparently don't want anything to do with the Billy Goats.
