Goal for next year is simple - Beat Memphis. Be the only team in CUSA next year to beat Memphis. Nobody (CUSA) has done it in 2 years (watch now they will lose in the tourney this year). We get some exposure. Show we can put a complete game together against a class opponent - and build confidence.

too lofty. Had we gotten a couple quality wins late in the season or made run in the tournament, I could buy the upswing, gel, improve hope certificate. As it is we almost collapsed on our home floor and gave away certain wins vs Rice and S. Miss. Houston just outclassed us in back to back games which is equally concerning since they are a middle of the pack CUSA team this year who didnt even earn a day one bye. Usually when a team beats you, if you are in their same stratosphere, getting them 3 days later with a payback opportunity on a nuetral floor is a golden chance. Proves to me we arent really even close to as good as houston.

I agree. I cannot make a case for us being close to as good as Houston. However, I can say we are as close to as good as them as we have been in 4 years.

Worst season??!!?!? Not even close...I'd say the 90-91 season was pretty misrable, Rod Hampton, bless his heart, could barely bring the ball up court. Seems like we lost 10 in row..tough, terrible year, weak talent. The year after we won the SWC, we tanked in 93-94, 5-20(?). Not many dudes on that squad could put the ball in the hole. In fact, the next year sucked as well..seems like 94-95 mirrored 93-94. We at least gave Shumate 7 years before we showed in the door. He did give us a ring, however, in year 5, imagine that...you could also make a case that the year beofre we won the SWC, we sucked, 3 or 4 conferecne wins, it was pitiful. I am sure all you gurus and Dicky V. wannabes can find a handful of other crap [deleted] years.....we have some talent, we have a respectable coach, he needs a few more years. Relax. PS: Dement did not put big smiles on your faces until year 5.

This team is so far ahead of Dave Bliss' first team at SMU that won 5 games all year it is not even close. That team was regularly drummed by 20-30 and 40 points

This crowd would have axed Dave after year 2...SMU won a total of 4 SWC games in Dave's first TWO seasons.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing w/ you since I didn't see that season, but if we were were playing SWC competition this year we would have regularly been drummed by 20-30 as well. McCoy would have been in a wheelchair by midseason. This was a horrible, horrible team this year and there isn't much hope for the future beyond 13-14 wins w/ the current roster.

I started watching SMU basketball in 2001 and I'm fairly confident we've gotten worse every single year. That's absolutely amazing.

There's a BIG difference in winning 4 conference games when you're playing UT, Tech, Arkansas and A&M than if you're playing Marshall, UTEP, So Miss and Central Florida. Granted I didn't see the Bliss teams play but I would bet they would beat this year's squad.

One of the issues around here, see last 2 posts...lack of historical perspective.

Are you kidding? Student attendance at bball is terrible. 2 dozen people in their greek shirts is not a student section. 8-10 years ago when Dement had us competitive there were 5X more students at every game and they would actually wear the red Mustang Maniacs shirts.

Absolutely agree with this...I was in school '98-'02 and the student attendance then blows the doors off the current students. Like noted above, EVERYONE wore red maniac shirts and if you didn't arrive early there was no room to stand in the bleachers. No excuse for the students to not fill up those areas and be loud. Being so close to the action should be a huge advantage for the home team. I yell louder at the other team/refs and I sit in the stands...

If we were going to beat Memphis, this had to be the year! We had no chance beating them last year with Derrick Rose and friends. Now go over to Rivals and check out the ridiculous recruiting class they have coming in. I think they have 3 or 4 of the top 10 players in the country and are close to signing the #1 high school player in the country.

Historical perspective is fine, but there has to be expected levels of achievement for the program. Regardless of SMU's history, the results of this season were acceptable. A bad history should not be the for excuse poor results today.

Several of the good programs today (Butler, UConn, Gonzaga, etc.) were virtually nothing 20 - 30 years ago, yet they developed over time into winners. If continuing to blame history is acceptable, then this program will never move forward.

Dave Bliss' 1st two seasons at SMU saw a TOTAL of 13 wins. The low point was a HOME loss to Rollins College as I recall. There was plenty of doom and gloom except for those of us who saw the talented FR coming in. I remember Reggie Pink was Bliss' 1st Dallas area recruit when the stated goal was to recruit one or two of yhr top players in Dallas every year.

It's too early to call with Doherty. I like a lot of what I see but also have plenty of concerns. Let's not kid ourselves...if he could go out and recruit a Top 25 caliber team TOMORROW it would be done and several of the guys on today's roster would be history...but we aren't in a position to make things happen that quickly.

Let's hope for at least 2-3 new faces in the low post next year and improvement to the point where we can at least defend our home court against CUSA teams. With McCoy and Williams coming back along with Walker,Haynes and Harp in the backcourt, I expect that assist to turnover ratio to improve. That's what I am REALISTICALLY looking for next year.

I'll settle for just beating UTEP - a program with much basketball trandition than SMU will ever have
