Could JJ system backfire?

Postby expony18 » Thu Apr 23, 2009 10:43 pm

i know everyone is expecting us to land some big name QB once we start winning some games, why?

I am a huge JJ fan and love the offense he runs, but will that attract REAL QB talent. Sure he will get some 3 stars and maybe a 4 star, but why would a 5 star QB go to a school that runs an offense like SMU, TT, etc. Sure you will put up ungodly numbers, but if your ultimate goal is the NFL wouldnt you want to be in a pro-style offense? sure JJ has plenty of credibility and coached in the NFL, well respected for his knowledge of the game, but does that translate to a good pro prospect?

Look at leach. How many QB's have gone to the next level and excelled under his system? (crickets chirping) How many QB's were successful in the NFL after playing under JJ? Colt Brennan had a good preseason for the Redskins, but they are looking at drafting Sanchez so that tells you what they think about Brennan.

Put yourself in the shoes of a 5 star recruit. You have a chance to play anywhere in the country. Where do you want to be in four years? Graham Harrell or Mark Sanchez? (not sure what either of these guys were rated coming out of high school, but thats besides the point). Do you want to be the "System QB" or do you want to be a guy like Sanchez who can run a pro-style offense and take snaps under center.

However, I think it shows how great of a coach JJ really is. How many high profile QB's came to Hawai'i (besides legal trouble... zing)? stallion insert answer here. JJ can make an average high school QB into a record breaking QB in the NCAA, but are the QB's NFL ready?

Watch Colt Brennans Pro Highlights. He looks amazing

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy4M-5y5_PE

And why do we need a 5 star? Tech always wins lots of games with their 3 and 4 star QB's in the Big 12. CB wasnt very highly rated. If we get the right 2 star guy we could win conference championships. Im sure there are plenty of guys who are a little too short to play for the big boys but have great accuracy and a quick release that we could find that could run the system just fine.

his pro highlights look so good (against 3rd stringers) that they are looking to draft a QB in the first round...

Plus why would a 4 or 5 star want to come here anyway? With JJ we will for sure get more looks by 3 and high 2 stars with multiple offers than we did before.
And it doesnt matter how they are ranked. JJ knows how to pick QB's. If he got us 2 4.9 2 stars this year i would feel confident that they will be awesome!

Don't need a 5-star QB in this system. BLM, good example.

but none would want to come here regardless of the system. How many non BCS schools got 4 star QB's last year? I know Tulsa got one. WHo else? As far as 5 star. there is about 2 or 3 a year . Willis being a 5.5 was huge for us

Timmy Chang had 19 his first year. But Timmy also ran a passing O in HS. Bo had 3 weeks to learn the most complicated passing system in college football. He came from an I-formation O. Dude. He will get it. Just watch his HS highlight tape.

Why worry about the qb. The defense setsup and maintains the win or concedes the loss. If SMU does not build a D1 defense then its all over and you can forget the other side of the ball. With a good D you can take an average offense and win, with a good D and if Jones can get his offense working SMU will at some point win a CUSA championship .

You are using Colt Brennan as an example of a highly rated QB going to Hawaii? He *walked on* to Hawaii. Articles mentioned that he initially went to Colorado...but they don't mention that he *walked on* to Colorado.

If I remember correctly Tim Chang had a lot of offers and at that time it was common for the top recruits in Hawaii to not go to UH, so his recruitment was very high profile.
