Has anyone actually seen these SMU fan cans at a store in Dallas yet?
I wanna buy a bunch of 'em before the angry blue hairs try to get them banned!

Nice. I bet if all these schools got a little pay-day they would be fine with it. :?

I think the real shame is they don't come with a better beer....

Yea, I'd die and go to heaven if Keystone Light had come up with such a great idea :D

Fan Can' campaign stirs controversy
Taylor Adams, Associate News Editor, [email protected]

Issue date: 8/27/09 Section: News

In a new campaign, Bud Light might use their beverages to spread school spirit by featuring school colors on beer cans. In response, SMU has joined numerous other schools in protesting the products.

SMU officials worry that the Bud Light "Fan Cans" discourage many campuses' efforts in lowering underage drinking.

"I believe it's exploitive for the company to distribute these cans," said SMU Vice President of Student Affairs Lori White.

After making the news in drug and drinking related deaths in the 2006-2007 school year, SMU created the Task Force on Substance Abuse Prevention. White believes the campaign "undermines our efforts" to curb substance abuse.

"We do not support what they are doing for SMU or other campuses," she said.

The cans are to feature different school colors without mascots or school symbols. According to The Dallas Morning News, these are scheduled to sell in local stores with colors for SMU, TCU and UNT.

An exact number of how many schools have asked to stop the promotion is unknown, but Anheuser-Busch will pull the cans if a university asks them to do so.

According to White, SMU is not planning on contacting Anheuser-Busch InBev to stop the promotion, as long as the SMU Fan Cans are not in stores.

And what does the SMU Vice President of Student Affairs intend to do about the officially licensed SMU shot glasses, beer steins, wine glasses, and other barware for sale at the SMU Bookstore? Since she does not address how SMU itself might be encouraging underage drinking with these items, her comments regarding fan cans (which, by the way, you can keep cold in an SMU Mustang emblazoned beer koozie also available at the bookstore) fall flat and have the appearance of being nothing more than sanctimonious posturing

UT declines to join criticism of beer cans in school colors
A&M, SMU, other colleges fault Anheuser-Busch for Bud Light promotion.

Texas A&M University, Southern Methodist University, Boston College, Penn State University, Iowa State University and numerous other schools are no fans of the "fan can." But the University of Texas isn't complaining about the orange-and-white Bud Light cans on the shelves in the Austin area.

Critics of St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. say the nation's largest brewer is promoting underage and binge drinking as well as infringing on trademarks by cloaking its product in various schools' colors. An official from the Federal Trade Commission joined the growing chorus of criticism this week.

Chris Plonsky, who oversees various licensing matters as women's athletic director at UT, said Thursday that the university is OK with the Bud Light product, which is sold in 24-can packs the size of a small suitcase.

"It wasn't even close to our colors," Plonsky said, noting that UT has certain legal rights regarding its hue of burnt orange. "This was Illinois orange or Syracuse orange. We felt there was no intrusion at all."

If they have a KU can, that would probably come close to what an SMU can would look like.
